In the epic poem The Odyssey, Homer utilizes plot to develop a major motif, the repercussions of succumbing to temptation. One of the most memorable instances when Odysseus gave into temptation was at the island of the cyclops. He gave into his curiosity and he entered the cyclops's home. The aggressive cyclops came home and ate multiple men. Odysseus’s lust for Kleos is also a temptation. He surrendered to it when he reveals his identity to Polyphemus, bringing the wrath of Poseidon upon him and his crew. Only Odysseus survived. Another example of Odysseus giving into temptation is the Siren ordeal, when he insisted on listening to the Siren's mesmerizing song. The crew were made to plug their ears, so that they could sail safely by the Sirens’…
Even though The Odyssey is 1000 of years old, the use of human flaws serves the same purpose of defending readers against lousy feelings.…
“….But any man I catch trying to skulk behind his long beaked ship, hanging back from battle, he is finished. No way for him to escape the dogs and birds!” So he commanded and the armies gave a deep resounding roar like the waves crashing against a cliff when a South Wind whips it, bearing down, some craggy headland jutting out to sea, the waves will never leave it in peace, thrashed by gales that hit from every quarter, breakers left and right.”*1…
From the epic poem by Homer, The Odyssey, Odysseus lack heroism presented in his actions. His success is due to the fact, he is able to intelligently apply himself in dire situations. However the majority of feats are unnecessary, as he tends to indulge in these predicaments due to his selfishness and curiosity. For example, at the time of Lotus Eaters, Odysseus sets course to the Lotus Eaters to discover who are natives of the island. His curiosity ended up of 3 of his men getting paralyzed and brainwashed by the Lotus Eaters.…
Plenty of things in the world are tangible. It’s the things we can’t touch like love, loyalty, freedom, friendship, and imagination that are concealed within everyone’s lives. These universal ideas can also be motifs; a motif is a dominant idea or distinctive feature in an artistic or literary composition. Motifs are used to teach a lesson to others throughout out dance, art, or literature. Motifs have been around and hidden in literature for a very long time. Almost 3,000 years ago there was a tale told by Homer, his story is now translated into an epic poem called The Odyssey. The story is based around king Odysseus and his 20 year voyage home…
In the epic, The Odyssey, by Homer, there are many themes introduced in the first several books including manhood and loyalty. The first several books show us these themes through the hero entering the journey and realizing morals and ideas throughout the introduction.By doing this, themes and main points are revealed and are easier to identify for the rest of the story, and the characters, plot, and actions introduced in the first several books further foreshadows future later in the story. In this way, Homer leads a path that the reader can predict the theme through the first several books by indentifying those aspects and elements of the epic.…
A personal virtue that is a major theme in the epic, The Odyssey, is loyalty and perseverance. The best example of loyalty in of the epic, Penelope, who waited faithfully in Ithaca for 20 years for her husband, Odysseus’, to return. Odysseus’ son Telemachus, who also showed loyalty by standing by his father against the suitors who are after the throne. The two analytical lenses that I will use to interpret this epic, is the Psychological and the social class lens. The psychology lens focuses on the internal struggles of a character in a text. This could be seen by the three main characters, Odysseus, Telemachus, and Penelope. All three character, psychologically, have their mind set on their longing reunion throughout the epic which ties to…
As William Makepeace Thackeray once said, "bravery never goes out of fashion." This theme is evident both in modern day life and ancient literature. As America found out this past August, men will go to all ends to prove their masculinity. William Lawson, of Louisiana, is among the more recent examples of this. Years after leaving the Marine Corps as a grunt, without fighting experience, he masqueraded as a Marine Corps General. His deception lasted for decades before his story unraveled. Similarly, men throughout time have come up with ways of cloaking their foolishness with a deep blanket of machoism. Such is the tale of Odysseus, of Homer's Odyssey. As Book Nine of the Odyssey reveals, Odysseus' tactful nature belies the many mistakes he makes.…
Authors use many literary devices in order to heighten and enhance their works. Dramatic irony, expressions to complementary attitudes understood by the audience but not the characters, can make the emotions stronger in literature. Homer is one of many authors who used this technique well. In The Odyssey, Homer uses dramatic irony in order to enhance the emotional effect of crucial moments in the storyline, especially during the journey of Telemachus, the initial return of Odysseus, and the restoration of Odysseus to his rightful place in the kingdom.…
Amidst all the countless struggles, problems and circumstances we faced throughout our journey, still, here we are fighting!, finding our own ways just to survive and even risking our lives and reputation just to say ‘let’s move forward and continue the race of life’….it is because we have this HOPE, hope which we hold that gives strength to us to stand still. But what if, the hope we hold has gone and it seems we are forgotten by our hope for almost a day, a month, and or a year? Would you still hold and believe in your trusted hope? It is, ‘we should not expect something for nothing but we all do, and we call it hope.’ (Ed Howe)…
There is a fine line drawn between superiority and suppressiveness. Although, together the adjectives are terrifying, these words describe a man who for decades hid his misconduct towards women. This is just one of many stories that has publicly unfolded and revealed the hideous truth behind a man with power in the film industry. Since the article written by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, published in The New York Times, actresses and models have come forward; sharing their own horrific encounters with Harvey Weinstein. Their experiences have highlighted the importance of confronting men who take advantage of their power and manipulate people to keep them quiet. It is injustice for anyone to use their superiority to intentionally hurt others…
To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson, “A great man is always willing to be little”. In Homer’s “The Odyssey”, the oldest epic poem known to man, Odysseus, king of Ithaca, is called to the Trojan War. He leaves his home, thinking that he will be back soon, without realizing that the God’s wrath would prevent him from getting home. Odysseus demonstrates many concepts throughout his journey, but the most prominent is his usage of hubris and humility towards the Gods. The hubris he shows towards the Gods is what fuels their rage and makes his journey longer. Although Odysseus shows a great amount of hubris towards the beginning of his journey, as he experiences many humbling experiences, his humility increases.…
During the Odyssey alot of good advice is given to one another. Unfortunatley this good advice is usually ignored and results is disaster. Due to this theres many unfortunate events during this story just on the act of stubborness.…
Closed adoptions are adoptions in which the birthparents of the adopted child have no contact with the child after he/she is adopted or with the adoptive parents. No identifying information is provided to the adoptive family or the adopted child. Closed adoptions are controversial because they basically cut off all connections between the child and the birthparents. The child may never know who their birthparents are and they may have many questions that may remain unanswered. Many people think that these situations can cause problems with the child and the birthparents. We plan to show how closed adoptions are beneficial to the adopted child.…
Sorrow, Suffering, Grief, Agony, Distress, and Misery: According to Greek Mythology the act of being human demands that you must suffer and there is no escape from pain, it is the price you pay to be human. “By nights he would lie beside her, of necessity, in the hollow caerns, against his will, by one who was willing, but all the days he would sit upon the rocks, at the seaside, breaking his heart in tears and lamentation and sorrow as weeping tears he looked out over the barren water. “(5.154-158) Mental suffering Penelope, Telemachus grew up w/o dad: "swerved aside, leaving his long spearshaft lodged in Amphinomus"(Book 22-100). When T kills A he shows Odysseus that he grew up in O’s shoes, even without him around. T proves he has grown up until he leaves the door to the storeroom, giving the suitors weapons. T shows that he is not afraid of death by hanging the suitors. Physical: As for those culprits I will quickly strike their swift ship with my bright lightning bolt, and shatter it to pieces out on the wine-dark sea.”…
