Noah’s Ark vs. The Story of the Flood The Story of Noah’s Ark and The Story of the Great Flood are very alike in many ways. They both distinct characteristics of the ark, or person, the events that took place are also parallel to each other. The Sumerian version of the story is in The Epic of Gilgamesh, the Hebrew/Christian version of the flood story is told in the book of Genesis .In both cases God chose an honorable men that he thought would be capable of carrying out the task. A verse form the bible expresses one of the reasons God choice Noah, “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God. (Genesis6:9). The Gods must have thought Utnapishtim was also a great and honorable man because Ea appeared in his dream and warned him about the flood. Both Noah and Utnapishtis’s families were also saved from the flood. “The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great...” (Genesis 6:5) “The uproar of mankind is intolerable…” (Gilgamesh 108) In both stories The God/s wanted to flood the world because of the …show more content…
wickedness of humankind, leading them both to show Noah and Utnapishtim how to build the ark.
”Tear down your house and build a boat…then take up into the boat the seed of all living creatures.”(Gilgamesh 108) “Make yourself an ark…and of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two every
kind in to the ark.”(Genesis 6:19) Both of the quotes explain what God has requested them to do. There a lot of small similarities that makes the two narratives comparable. The Size of the arch, both arks had at least one window and the boat landed on a mountain. The similarities of these stories can be seen as big or small but can defiantly been seen as parallels.
The story of the great flood is told with a lot of characters in Sumerian Mythology. In ancient times the thought of having many gods with human qualities was common. For an example the gods Anu, Enlil, Ninurta, Ennugi, and Ea and the other gods mentioned in the story are all from Sumerian mythology. It is also written as if Ultnapishtim was telling it to Gilgamesh. The gods in the city of Shurupak created the flood because the people were too many and too loud, in the bible version God created the flood because they people were sinful. Another difference is that in the bible version of the flood God flooded the whole world; in the Sumerian version of the flood the god’s only flood the city. In the Sumerian story it polytheistic in Genesis God is monotheistic. In justice the flood is an example of Gods justice in Gilgamesh it is an example of the god’s cruel punishment. The Sumerian story of the great flood came first because the Sumerian civilization was established before the Hebrew civilization was established which means The Epic of Gilgamesh was written before the Jewish bible.
