Both parties agreed when it sought to increase their support through the expansion of the right to vote among white males. In the beginning, when it came to differentiate the parities, there wasn’t much to contrast. The only contrasts was that the Whigs got support from the Northeast and the Democrats from the South and West, in addition to the Whig party being against President Jackson going into office as they would view him as too similar to the throne. However, as time went on, the parties would develop different ideologies. For example, the Whig party would become more conservative; they wanted a strong national government, tariffs on imports, monopolies, a national banking system, and construction of roads and railroad, similar to the Federalist. On the other hand, the Democrats fought for states rights, embraced immigrants, and laissez faire (letting government be, letting it take care of itself). Overall, the Whigs were not a strong political party because they mostly formed based on opposition rather than an ideology. They would win their first presidential election by nominating General Henry William but would be based on personal qualities rather than government issues and beliefs, which would not help out in office. The Republicans relied heavily on raising troops, funding, and support during the time of war, it seemed as the Republicans had more control than the Democrats, however, the Democrats remained a political competition as they nearly achieved to beat President Lincoln in election. The Democrats dominated the South and were against abolishing slavery, however, the Republicans still sought to convert the Democrats in Reconstruction that gave freed slaves the right to vote but failed.
