Stories are made of different parts: plot, setting, theme and characters. The characters play a main role in making the story as it is, characters can represent theme too. The author can use the characters in any way they want and this will be examined and explained here.
At the start of the story ‘Wasps’ Therese is innocent and bored. “That was the summer Therese stepped on the wasps” This shows that she was bored so she went outside to play in the garden alone. Also, this can represent innocence as she steps on it without knowing that it was a wasp nest, if she knew it would not have happened. And another way that it represents innocence is that she was outside alone. This indicates that she does not know about the dangers outside. All of this represents the theme of innocence.
This can be seen as well in The Flowers by the way that Myop is skipping around in summer into the forest alone. “Today she made her own path, bouncing this way and that way.” This shows that she does not know that you could get lost easily in the forest especially if you are going around in random directions.
While Myop is skipping she cares about nothing else but a tune she likes. “And nothing existed for her but her song” This shows that she does not know that she could trip on anything if she does pay attention, representing the theme of innocence as well.
The theme of ‘maturity’ is seen by Therese as she learns the truth of the world. “Therese yawned before rolling onto one side and up.” This is mentioned after Therese has found the body and took the ring, showing us that she doesn’t realize that it was a dead person. However, later on she starts to get nightmares about the arm growing. This shows that she is starting to realize what she has found, or in other words she is growing up.
Eveline is also growing up through the story because she “fashioned a bikini from a pair of pink knickers and an old vest” which she had
