He does this because he is really lonely. One can see this because at the beginning of the scene, Harry is in his room on his birthday with a picture of a cake and he says “Make a wish Harry.” Because he is alone on his birthday, anyone can see he is lonely and therefore probably wants a change in environment. This also shows it is an open pane to the audience and Harry, but a hidden pane to his family, because they are too self-centered in their own lives.
