Father And Son In Flannery's Home
The father seems to be a very impatient and self-concerning man. Although it is six in the morning, he doesn’t care his son isn’t dressed properly. He also tries to rush the child and woman out as quickly as possible so he can go back to sleep. Flannery writes, “He went to the door and [opens] it wide and [waits].” The man clearly wants the two to leave and continually tries to get rid of them but the lady keeps talking. When the man asks what time the child will be back, she doesn’t give a specific time but the man doesn’t seem to mind. Most parents would like to know the exact time and where they’re going.
Flannery writes, “you [find] out more when you [leave] where you [live].” She goes on to write about how much Harry learns from the babysitter

His parents clearly don’t care much about him and swear a lot and don’t teach him anything. The babysitter is taking the time to teach him about Jesus which shows her kindness for a boy she’s just met. She reads him a book with pictures about Jesus and tells him about how Jesus took all the pigs out of a man. Harry believes everything she tells him and believes the book because it has pictures of real pigs rather than fake pink smiley ones.
Flannery uses the sun as a symbol which is used to represent Christian faith. Its reflection is "set like a diamond" in the river where Harry is baptized. The personification of the sun emphasizes the idea that hope and faith overcome the darkness of sin and lack of faith. As Mrs. Connin leads her own children and Harry to the healing at the river, "The white Sunday sun followed at a little distance, climbing fast through a scum of gray cloud as if it meant to overtake them."
The preacher refers Luke 18:35-43, where Jesus gives a bling beggar his sight, because he says the people will not be healed unless they believe in

In “The River”, O’Connor explores the metaphors of the sun and the sky. The frequent descriptions of the sun reinforce the idea that hope and faith can overcome the darkness of sin. As Mrs. Connin takes her children and “Bevel” to the healing at the river, "The white Sunday sun followed at a little distance, climbing fast through a scum of gray cloud as if it meant to overtake them" (O’Connor 162-163). In addition, When Bevel (the preacher) tells Bevel (the child) that after he is baptized he will "count," Harry looks over his shoulder "at the pieces of the white sun scattered in the river" (168). In sharp contrast, when Harry wakes up at home the next day, he sees that “the sun came in palely, stained gray by the glass" (171); in this case, the sun cannot shine in the home because his family never had faith in God and never taught Harry in the ways of religion.…

The father was deprived of a childhood, therefore he lacked manners. He shows up for a date with the mother too early, making the encounter with her family awkward. “…he has come too early and so is suddenly embarrassed.” He would get upset at the son because the son is emotionally weak and would cry a lot, and that would drive the father back into a childhood phase. “…shout words… communicate my terrible fear… shut my eyes because I could not bear to see what was happening.” Not only did living alone at the age of thirteen make him lack manners, he also gained independency from the experience. “…lived by himself since his thirteenth year.” The father didn’t know the ideal ways of life and this agitated the mother.…

In the first two paragraphs of the text, the narrator probably did not think much of his father as a role model. He was irresponsible and indifferent to people’s opinions and worries other than himself. For example, in the first paragraph the father snuck in his underage son “into a nightclub during [their] last visit” (Powder 17). Apparently from what the narrator had said, it seems that the mother and father have separated and the son is currently residing with the mother. The irresponsible behavior of the father may have been a factor to the separation of the family. Second, “he was indifferent to my fretting” (Powder 17) as it started snowing at the peak and decided to stay a while longer. In the second paragraph the father insisted that…

The father begins spending less and less time at home, resulting in Dave getting even more beatings from his mother because she is blaming him for the issues in her marriage. That summer the family goes on a vacation and it seems as if Dave and his mother are getting along better until one day he is playing with his brothers and she scolds him for being too loud and is not allowed to go with them to the slide. Dave's mother punishes him even further by taking a dirty diaper and smearing it in his face, trying to get him to eat it. When he refuses she hits him and then the abuse stops long enough for her to tend to the baby and then she rubs another dirty diaper into Dave's face and tells him again to eat it. Just in time, the family returns and the abuse stops with his mother throwing a washcloth at him to clean himself up and then forces him to sit in the corner for the remainder of the night. The next chapter has Dave's father coming home even less, but when he does he helps Dave to wash the dishes. When his mother scolds his father saying the boy should not be helped, Dave's father becomes rarely seen at…
