As a child she fell in love with a mortal boy named Stephen, who gave her what he called true loves kiss. As they grew up Stephen became so overcome with greed and the desire to be king that he betrayed Maleficent. Maleficent grew bitter with hate for King Stephen. At Aurora's christening Maleficent cursed her with a sleep like death in which she could only be awakened buy true loves kiss.
