Throughout the history of the world, love and hate have been battling it out to see which one will prevail. They’ve gone back and forth, but neither has completely overtaken the other. Many people know Darwin’s theory of evolution to also be called “survival of the fittest”, but there is a certain negative connotation that accompanies this phrase. It makes people think evolution is backed by the basis of having to be tough and violent to survive in the world, yet Darwin didn’t believe humans are naturally rough and violent when he came up with the concept. He suggested humans are naturally caring towards each other(Raison). Dacher Keltner, director of the Berkeley Social Interaction Laboratory and author of the book, “Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life”, studies how kindness and evolution work together. He has looked into why humans bother to be kind to one another if it appears as if an act of kindness has no value at the surface in the “survival of the fittest” mindset. His findings suggest the link between kindness and evolution is the desire of humans to pass on their genes to future generations. Cooperation is key in raising a child in multiple ways, and it requires kindness to be able to work together with others(Weigel). It is kind of a survival of the fittest mindset, but in the end it's all about how well people show kindness to each other in order to work well with others and pass their genes down to the next generation. Keltner has also done research and found evidence of a particular nerve in the body having the potential be the key as to why humans are naturally altruistic. He says, "The vagus nerve is part of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system... When active, it is likely to produce that feeling of warm expansion in the chest, for example when we are moved by someone’s goodness...Our research and that of other scientists suggests that the vagus nerve may be a physiological system that supports caretaking and altruism...People who have high
