A Holy Grail is defined as an object or goal that is sought after for its great significance.
Throughout history legends of the holy grail have been told, especially in Christianity. The legend of the holy grail first started when King Arthur and his knights went searching for the chalice that Jesus used at the last supper and collected his blood during his crucifixion. In The
Da Vinci Code , however, the Grail is seen as Mary Magdalene and her womb which carries
Jesus’ blood, his child.

the truths of Christianity. According to “The Code” Jesus designated Mary Magdalene as his successor.
And at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion Mary Magdalene was pregnant with Jesus’ child, a daughter that would be named Sarah. The theory also reads, Mary Magdalene being pregnant she became
The Holy Grail, the sacred feminine, the vessel who carried Jesus’ child.
In the Da Vinci Code Mary Magdalene is seen as Jesus’ wife. There is one passage in the pseudo Gospel of Philip, written about A.D. 250 that claims Jesus often kissed Mary Magdalene on her ‘blank”, where he kissed her is obscured in the manuscript. This could mean nothing seeing as family members and friends often kiss each other, not in a way a husband does to his
Cusey 2 wife, but a holy kiss that Jesus gave to all of his followers. While this passage is vague and uncertain the recent discovery of an ancient papyrus, which includes a line that translates to say
“Jesus said to them “my wife...” , is very straightforward. While it does not mention Mary
Magdalene it clearly states that Jesus had a wife in some way. In the bible however St. Mary
Magdalene is a legendary example of Jesus’ mercy and grace. She was present with christ during his public ministry, death, and resurrection. She is mentioned at least 12 times throughout the Gospels. She is said to have been a prostitute but because this is not supported by the scriptures it is believed that she was actually a Jewish woman living among the disciples and traveling with them. The Gospels agree that Mary was originally a great sinner, so much so that
Jesus cast seven demons out of her when they met.
Afterwards, she shared this with several other women and they became followers. In both versions she is a woman who is well acquainted with Jesus and his followers.
The Bible makes reference at the time of his crucifixion Mary Magdalene is one of the women who was present in order to provide Jesus with comfort. Although in The Da Vinci code
Mary Magdalene was at the crucifixion because she wanted to say goodbye to her husband and the father of her child. The code further suggests Mary Magdalene was pregnant because she is carrying Jesus’ blood she becomes The Holy Grail. Mary Magdalene later gave birth to a daughter that was named Sarah. Sarah, in the Code, was born and raised in Egypt until she was
12 years old. After which her and Mary Magdalene Moved to Paris. There Sarah married into the French royal blood and created the bloodline of the Merovingian kings of France. The lineage, according to The Da Vinci Code, still exists today.

There is no proof that Mary Magdalene gave birth to Sarah or even had children. Yet according to the bible Sarah was a native of Upper Egypt, and was the maid of the Three Mary’s.
In the bible this Sarah is said to have traveled with the Three Mary’s and help them with
their messages. Because both accounts are so similar that Sarah was born in Egypt, and she was very close with the three Mary’s is something scholars are trying to figure out, what is fact and what is fiction.
The Last Supper completed in 1498 is the painting that causes much speculation when it comes to the Da Vinci Code. The person to the right of Jesus is usually said by scholars to be
John. However, the individual is dressed to complement Jesus. The person has very feminine features, and has hands clasped right besides those of Jesus. This person is speculated to be
Mary Magdalene by the Da VInci code. The Da Vinci code makes reference of hidden letters within the painting, a V for the shape of a womb, and a M for M ary Magdalene. How did Da
Vinci know if the figure really is Mary Magdalene? How did he know she was a corresponding figure to Jesus? In the Da Vinci Code, Leonardo da Vinci is said to be apart of a secret society known as The Priory of Sion. Except The Priory was not founded until the 1950s. This means that it would have been impossible for Da Vinci to be apart of this group and could not have known if Mary Magdalene was in fact Jesus’ wife. Without the Priory of Sion there is nothing to state that Da Vinci, without a doubt put secret messages into his paintings.
The Da Vinci Code is an extremely debatable subject. Those who believe in it are very adamant with the amount of evidence that has been stated by the Novel, The Last Supper, the passage in the pseudo Gospel of Philip, and the new found piece of papyrus. Yet all of the
Cusey 4 evidence can be seen as just one man's opinion and very vague. So what really is the holy grail, is it Mary Magdalene, a cup, or nothing but a legend?
