The statues of David by Michelangelo, Donatello, Bernini and Verrocchio were representations of a biblical hero the king David of Israel, who at a young age killed a warrior Goliath armed with only a stone and a swirl. The four statues are different from each other because they were from different periods and were made from different materials. Each statue is different because of the body posture and clothing choices. All the four statues were made in Italy and that is where they can currently be found.
The David created by Michelangelo is a 17.0 ft tall statue carved from a single piece of marvel created between 1501 and 1504. This rendition does not represent David as a hero but as a young man in his mid to late twenties, fully developed in his masculinity before he engages with Goliath he is holing a sling and not a sword. Also the facial expression and body language shows David contemplating his first move using intellect and wit to defeat the enemy over use of strength this statue is the most perfect heroic representation of David as compared with the other statues. composed, while the left-hand side is openly seen to be active and dynamic. This could represent the strong willing he had to fight against Goliath, but also the fact of not being strongly capable to fight against him.
Similarly, the David created by Donatello is a bronze figure crafted in the 1430s, that stands 5 ft tall with a sword, and David is nude between its helmet and boots.
This statue portrays David as a young boy with feminine qualities, but that is holding a sword instead of a sling. He represented David as a boastful hero as compared to Michelangelo who represented him as a humble hero. However, Donatello did not represent him admiring the head of his victim, Goliath rather he is admiring his graceful, powerful body as a result of him winning the battle. This David has long hair, which highlights the time period and it almost looks like Donatello used this sculpture to move away from the biblical representation This is one amongst many sculptures of the Renaissance art whereby admiration of self-worth was mainly the
theme.
Also, Bernini created a statue of David that was made out of marble between 1623 to 1624 and stands 5.7 ft. tall. I believe the viewer of the statue might feel to be a part of David's move because of the immense tension of David's twisted body that conveys the strength which he used to release the stone. I think Bernini makes David look like it is moving the air around him because Bernini used the air itself to demonstrate the moment of unity between David and God.
Lastly, the David created by Verrocchio is a bronze statue that was most likely made between 1473 and 1475, the statue stands at 4.1 ft. David is portrayed as a youthful boy, standing on the head of Goliath holding a sword. This David has shorter hair, and has more boyish features. He is also wearing clothing, which looks light and soft, people can see his facial expressions compared to the other David’s because of the short hair of this statue.
All the four sculptures were modeled in different periods and by different artists who used techniques and styles different from each other. But they all were inspired by the same biblical story, and each David creates different discussions, debates and inspiration to each person.
