Mount Pinatubo is situated in the southern part of Luzon. It is one of the biggest volcanoes in the Philippines whereas Mount St. Helens is located in the continent of North America. It is in the USA in the state of Washington, which in the far west of America. It is in the mountain range the Rockies.
Pinatubo is a composite volcano and was dormant for 500 years until the June the 12th 1991 however St. Helens was dormant for 123 years and is a composite volcano too.
The first sign of activity at Mount St. Helens in 1980 was a series of small earthquakes that began on March 16. After hundreds of additional earthquakes, steam explosions the main explosion started on March 27th. Mount Pinatubo started when there were earthquakes, small explosions and emissions of steam and minor ash coming out of the volcano. The earthquakes and emissions continued. After more than 2 months of increasing activity, came an eruption which is one of the largest eruptions of this century.
One short term effect of the Mount St. Helens eruption is that 1300 feet was blasted off the top of the mountain. This would have a great effect because that would all break up into ash and cover the Earth, which would stop heat and light from the sun coming into the atmosphere. As a result, the greater effects of Global warming would have been delayed for a few years. The powerful eruption of Mount Pinatubo exploded such an enormous volume of lava and ash resulting in a reduction in the normal amount of sunlight reaching the Earth's surface by roughly 10%.
Another short term effect of the Mount St. Helens eruption is that power supplies were cut off and that the ash got into water supplies. This made the water become contaminated and would lead to spread of disease. In the eruption of Pinatubo over 800 people were killed and 100,000 became homeless. Most residents were evacuated for safety. Only 57 people died in the Mount st. Helens eruption.
