Competition in an Ecosystem
Competition in an Ecosystem: An animal in the Safari
By Nadezhda Blot 801

ROAR! Hello. My name is Rafas and I am a lion. I live in the South Africa safari along with my beautiful family of two cubs and my wife. The safari can be a dangerous place to live for any animal, even a lion. Let me tell you a little bit about our survival system here in the safari. There are many animals in the safari such as zebras, leopards, cheetahs, and deer. We all have different niches or roles that we play in the ecosystem. The lion’s niche is to be a predator. We hunt other animals like deer, and zebras. Without these organisms we will not be able to survive because they are our food suppliers. However, we are not the only ones that survive on the organisms. Cheetahs, tigers, and leopards are also predators, and since there aren’t that many options, we all have to share our resources. This sometimes leads to competition in the ecosystem. So far we have been equally sharing the resources that we all need and not one species population has drastically dropped. However, if we were competing there might be a chance where one species can be entirely robbed of their resources. We call this the principle of competitive exclusion. This would definitely put the specie with no resources into a drastic plummet into extinction. There are also different types of competition. Interspecies is when we compete with other organisms like I have just explained. However, there is also intraspiecies. This is when we compete with one another for resources. Once I had to fight a lion for have of a zebra because he wanted to eat the entire zebra himself. This shows greed and is not respected in our economy. My family stayed hungry that night because it wasn’t enough for them and they needed more. If they lived another few days like this, they would surely start losing weight, strength and eventually may die. Competition is very important in our lives in the safari. If we are not careful we might be

This relates to the principal of competitive exclusion because two species can not survive together in a permanent community if the have the same niches. There are many negative results that could occur if the interspecific competition is intense enough. The first and most drastic of the results would be complete extinction of one of the species because of lack of resources or lack of organization needed to get complete and full use of the resources that they are able to gather. Another result that could occur would be that the species that is becoming extinct from the battle for resources in that area would decide to move on but would then face the challenges of finding an area with shelter, nutrients, energy, and proper nesting areas. This scenario could also result in the extinction of the species if they fail to find proper shelter and…

Beginning with bacteria and unicellular organism, through invertebrates, fish and amphibians, on to reptiles, birds, and eventually land mammals, species have evolved in huge leaps and bounds in the millions of years that our planet has been in existence. We have moved out of the water and onto the land, we have developed brains and nervous systems, highly advanced survival instincts and social and behavioral traits that did not exist millions of years ago. Species have evolved to become more diverse and more complex through a number of different biological trends. But as much as we can learn about these phenomena by observing changes over time, in it much more difficult to predict where evolution is heading in the long run. Which species will survive and thrive, and which will find themselves unable to carry on due to changing conditions, threats, and competition? Evolution has allowed humans in particular to thrive and become creatures of choice, freedom, and responsibility. Although other animals have gained somewhat similar traits, it is clear that humans have control in hierarchy of animal society. In our rise to domination, we have created a disadvantage for other species to evolve to their full capacity. It is perhaps hard for more than one species to evolve towards full freedom at the same time. If humans found themselves faced with a dramatic change in environment…

Unaware of the nearby predator, the hoofed mammal grazed peacefully. The nearby lioness looking for a good meal for its children, stopped. A rustle of grass and in the distance made her ears twitch. Then she knew it was time for lunch. Surveying the savannah, she spotted the distinctive black and white stripes. The zebra itself, wary of nearby carnivores, couldn’t see the camouflaged golden lioness in the similarly golden grass. It gave up and carried on eating his lunch. Soundlessly, the stealthy lioness crept over the savannah. It stopped only 100 meters away and sized up the lonesome zebra.…
