1. Technology Description
Complex event processing (CEP) is the use of technology to predict high-level events likely to result from specific sets of low-level factors. CEP identifies and analyzes cause-and-effect relationships among events in real time, allowing personnel to proactively take effective actions in response to specific scenarios.1
CEP combines data from multiple sources to infer events or patterns that suggest more complicated circumstances. The goal of complex event processing is to identify meaningful events (such as opportunities or threats) and respond to them as quickly as possible.2
CEP can provide an organization with the capability to define, manage and predict events, situations, exceptional conditions, opportunities and threats in complex, heterogeneous networks. Many have said that advancements in CEP will help advance the state-of-the-art in end-to-end visibility for operational situational awareness in many business scenarios. These scenarios range from network management to business optimization, resulting in enhanced situational knowledge, increased business agility, and the ability to more accurately (and rapidly) sense, detect and respond to business events and situations.3
2. Industry/Business Applications of the Technology
Commercial applications of CEP include algorithmic stock-trading, the detection of credit-card fraud, business activity monitoring, security monitoring, security policy risk management, customer relationship management (CRM), application servers and middleware. 4 5
There are also wide variety of financial applications that incorporates CEP, (e.g. profit, loss, and risk management systems, order and liquidity analysis, quantitative trading and signal generation systems, and others. 6
