Abstract
This report considers what actions auto manufacturer Subaru should take to embrace zero-landfill manufacturing processes. The report summarizes the current clement of consumers desire to purchase from environmentally minded companies, and lists relevant facts as they relate to the manufacturing environment. Furthermore, the root problem and problem components are identified with several alternative actions offered. One alternative action including a full implementation plan is suggested as an answer to the current situation.
Introduction As gas prices rise, consumers look to purchase vehicles with higher and higher miles per gallon. More and more auto manufacturers are releasing hybrid (gas/electric) and full electric vehicles. Manufacturers are turning to hybrid gas/electric cars in the hopes of increasing sales to environmentally minded consumers. However, most manufacturers pay little attention to the environmental impact of producing hybrid and electric cars (Comprehensive Case Study, n.d.). Nearly half of the pollution from an electric car comes from the manufacturing process (The Week, 2011) leaving most facilities sending hundreds of millions of tons of waste to landfills (Comprehensive Case Study, n.d.).
According to business consultant Gary List “green” has become a hot commodity that customers are asking about, and employees desire to work for companies that are “green” (Comprehensive Case Study, n.d.). Also, recent studies have indicated that more than half of global consumers prefer to purchase products and services from companies with a strong environmental reputation (Environmental Leader,
