Concentration Camp Reflection
World War II has always been a fascination of mine. I would chose to spend a day with a Holocaust survivor to learn about the terrors that they were forced to endure during the war. The knowledge that is released to the public is limited in number with actual evidence of the survivors. We can read about what it would have been like, but to experience it with someone first hand is worth so much more. I understand that these people were taken out of their homes, forced to wear identification badges to stand out in public, and give up their rights and freedoms. No person can possibly understand what they went through, but by having some central ideas people could have sympathized more with them. These survivors would have felt that they had real friends who wanted to make life easier. This is why I want to gain insight into what life was truly like.

I would be selective on my questions in fear of bringing back dreaded memories. Learning about simple things like what they ate, clothes they were expected to wear, and friends they acquired while living there would provide a great deal of insight. I cannot image the hardships that they faced while in the camp, but I’m sure relationships were formed with people who were in the same predicaments. I would want to get a grasp of what their life was like before hand to understand the drastic changes that were implemented during World War II. Where they came from, how many siblings did they have, and what their family did to provide income would be just a few questions. Each family that was transported to these concentration camps had different challenges, and to be able to comprehend these would be beneficial to these survivors

According to the interview with Leslie Schwartz “ Life was unbearable, the daily seeing all these people, they were carried, the dead ones, sick ones.” This is how it was to most victims in the holocaust. They were surrounded by death, and pain, and on top of that if you were a child you wouldn’t survive long. Leslie also stated “ All those children of course, wind up in the crematorium.” If you were liberated how would you ever…

Out of the 140,000 Prisoners of war in Japanese camps, about one third of them died from starvation, punishment for disobedience, and disease. The POWs were treated very poorly because the Japanese did not follow the rules set in place by the Geneva Convention. The POWs were forced to work in mines, fields, shipyards and factories for twelve hours a day. If any disobedience was sensed in a prisoner, they would be beaten. The little food they were given included soy beans, seaweed, rice, and once a month, fish. Escape from Japanese camps was very rare. When somebody was caught trying to escape they would be killed in front of other prisoners. In some camps ten prisoners would be killed for every one prisoner that was caught escaping.…

I would want to hear the memoir of Shlomo Wiesel to know his perspective on the holocaust. Shlomo is much older than Elie and I feel he will have a bigger and broader perspective on the war, death, and the life at camp, putting it into much further detail. As an old man the pain and suffering will be greater versus Elie, seeing his family being split apart at the gates of Auschwitz. Events such as the evacuation of Buna, where the Russian army is closing in and the SS officers force the Jews to run relentlessly in the cold for miles or during the selection process at all the camps where Shlomo life is at stake. I want to know how Shlomo feels when Elie stands up and stops protecting him or giving away her rations.…

What would you do if you went back in time to the Holocaust? “The Devil’s Arithmetic” by Jane Yolen is about a jewish girl named Hannah who is tired of remembering about her family’s past. In the book Hannah is transported back in time to the time of the Holocaust. Hannah is taken to a concentration camp where she sees and feels what the Jews had to go through back then. By the end of the story, Hannah learns the importance of remembrance and how it impacts your view of things. Remembering is important in this story and in real life because Jews must understand how important it is to know about your heritage and culture, they must remember the Holocaust and its victims, and how important it is to use your voice when lives are at stake.…

Four days traveling to the moon on Apollo 11 had to be and amazing experience for Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin. What if I had been a part of that? A concentration camp refers to a camp or closed area where people are detained under brutal conditions usually having no access to legal rights of arrest and imprisonment that would normally be accepted in a democracy. People always say family is everything and they are the people that get you through the rough times. My family always helps me through the rough times in my life, I cannot imagine how someone who is barley receiving any nutrients in their body can survive the emotional challenges of being in a concentration camp. I decided to go with the topic of families in the Holocaust because the Holocaust was one of the first genocides I thought of. When we were told to be more specific I thought what better than the family life during and after the Holocaust. I had heard stories of couples that were never reunited and children who never saw their parents again and I wanted to learn more about what really happened and any information I could. I read many personal stories while doing research, that really helped give me more of an insight of how hard it was to build your life back and find your…

The whole story of the Holocaust is a very sad and depressing. When you first enter the museum, each person is given a passport with a picture of a child on it. Each child was involved in the Nazi rule and had their life forever altered because of it. As you go through the exhibits, you learn about the child and what happens to them throughout the Holocaust. At the end of this exhibit, you put your passport into a machine, and it tells you what happened to the child that you had. The one that I had was only six years old, and she didn't make it. There is one exhibit that is called "The Hall of Testimony". This is where you can hear the stories of the Holocaust survivors. There are also artifacts and documents that this museum withholds. It has actual copies of letters from Anne Frank. It's amazing that there are actual real documents that were able to be saved from this time. There are also images of the bunk beds that people were ordered to sleep in while they were in the death camps. The living conditions weren't by any standard, reasonable. The whole section of the museum made me appreciate the life that I live.…
