German Masters – Gulf Coast Symphony
November 2, 2013
The concert attended was “German Masters” on November second, at the Saenger Theatre in Biloxi. The Gulf Coast Symphony performed it beautifully. This theatre was an appropriate choice for the show. The environment was very comfortable. The temperature in the building was perfect, and the people surrounding me were very attentive and did not create any distractions. I sat in the front row, which had a very powerful and loud sound, but the small plants at the front of the stage limited my view. The piece of music that I liked most was Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 73 in E-flat (Emperor) by Beethoven. I enjoyed watching the pianist play the song with such emotion and skill. It was very entertaining to watch him play with such skill and emotion. I particularly enjoyed the pianist’s cadenzas where he shows off his skill. This song had multiple textures, homophonic for the majority of the song, and a few polyphonic parts. The song had a very wide range from lowest to highest. Its melodies were both conjunct and disjunct. Conjunct when the pianist would rapidly climb the scale in chords, and disjunct when he would jump all around the piano hitting different keys. My least favorite piece of music was Serenade for Winds, Op. 7 by Strauss. It was my least favorite because it featured the horns and woodwinds by themselves. It was not as enjoyable for me because I could not here the instruments as well as the strings. I also did not care for it as much because I prefer the sounds of the stringed instruments more. The sound of the cellos and violins are my favorite. The textures were homophonic and polyphonic. The melody was mostly disjunct. The harmony was consonant with a number of parts that were dissonant. The tempo was also too slow for my taste. I prefer a fast-paced Sonata Allegro or Rondo to keep my attention. Overall, my concert
