Aaron Copland Research Paper
My composer Aaron Copland was in the modern era. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 14, 1900. He died in North Tarrytown,New York on December 2, 1990. He died of Alzheimer's disease and respiratory failure. During this time World War 2 had begun , the great depression,World War 1, Russian revolution, and the Cold War.
Aaron Copland received some of his training from Nadia Boulanger at the Paris Conservatory. His older sister also taught him how to play the piano. The only one in his family that enjoyed music as much as he did was his sister. In fact his parents discouraged him and told him not to pursue his dream in music. To support himself financially he played piano at a local resort and joined the League of Composers. He composed Appalachian Spring and wrote The Red Pony for a movie. He liked to compose for younger audiences and composed several orchestral works for student audiences. In 1960 he stopped composing and started conducting because he felt a lack of inspiration. He wrote some pieces for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He believed that jazz inspired a sound that was distinctly American. Copland was very interested in jazz, but started getting more interested in folk music. In 1935 he composed El Salon Mexico, this was the beginning of his popular composer years. One of his very popular films was Our Town. Igor Stravinsky and Arnold Schoenberg influenced a lot of his pieces.
For my musical choice I picked Rodeo: Hoe Down. I think the mood in this music is happy there is a lot of upbeat rhythms and tones. The speed is very fast and quick it never stops its instruments and makes me want to dance.The dynamics are loud and will wake you up when you are taking a little cat nap. This piece had no voices but a lot of instruments. There is a piano on wooden blocks, trumpet, xylophone, and the violan. I think this piece is trying to convey happiness, laughter, and dance. It makes me want to get up and dance all
