Peter Abelard
Peter Abelard was born in 1079 near Brittany, and was the eldest son in his noble Breton family. Peter also known as "Pierre la Pallet" was a veryquick learner. With the encouragement of his wealthy father, Peter was able to study liberal arts, and excell is art of dialect. Following his studies, peter traveled around france debating, learing philosophy, and was even taught by St. Anslem. His travels brought him to Paris, were is was taught by William of Champeaux. Peters thoughts soon turned away from Williams teachings, and against Williams teaching peter started his own school Melun and then Corbeil.
After taking time off in Brittany due to health issues, Peter returned to Paris. He soon met up with his rival William and entered into another debate over universals. Peter won the debate again, and gained the reputation of his past teacher. After teaching in several school, in 1113 peter began to study theology. Historia Calamintatum is about Abelards rise to fame, and plummet to failure, it is a writting for people to feel better about themselves, after hearing about Abelard's life. This writing also explains the letters between Abelard and Heloise. The point of these letters is to remind others that he respected her, andshe was a formidable and personal women. His second auto biography was Sic et Non. This autobiography isn't necessarily about Abelard, but more about his thoughts and his theological questions. The purpose is for the reader to understant the conflict between authorities and rational discussion. Another influential piece of work was the Introductions Parvulrum. These are verbatim explanations of the texts available in west Latin. Abelard wanted to show how influential his first teacher Roscelin was to him.
