Every client we speak to all information must be kept under lock and key. I say the lock and key method is also known to many in the professional word. The only time we are permitted to break confidentiality is when we feel our client is in danger of being abused or has been abused or a situation where one's life is in danger, this also includes self-harm or a severe mental disability.
When speaking of a client with a severe mental disability we can only break confidentiality if a family member is unaware of the client's condition, and the social worker feels a cause for alarm. Besides these conditions, one never discusses their case with anyone including family members. Remember one very important fact even if we should run into our client on the outside we do not speak of the case.
Important fact: Many clients avoid help until they hit bottom and at that, they are too proud to ask for help. Many times this is due to a client feeling insecure about who finds out their situation.
