Confirmation: Saint Francis Of Assisi
The Saint I choose for Confirmation is Francis of Assisi. He is inspiring to me because of his close connection to God and animals. Saint Francis was born in Umbria as Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in late 1181 or early 1182. His parents were Pietro di Bernardone, a wealthy silk merchant who owned farmland and Pica de Bourlemont, a French noblewoman. His father nicknamed him “Francesco” which means Frenchman. He was one of seven children who lived a privileged life with fancy clothes and feasts. Later in life he cared for the sick and poor, praised all animals as brothers and sisters and was a friar and preacher, oftentimes preaching to animals. He received the stigmata of Christ and was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on July 16, 1228. An important thing he did in his life that was inspiring to me was he treated people who had leprosy, which shows how much he cared for others and put others before himself. He is the Patron Saint of animals, ecology, and Italy. Virtues that Saint Francis of Assisi demonstrated were love and faith. By praying for faith it made him grow deeper in his love for God. His feast day is on October 4th. It has been customary for churches to hold ceremonies to bless animals. I celebrate his feast day each year by taking my pets to be blessed, praying to him and thanking him for guiding me. Saint Francis is known for his love of the Eucharist, animals and the environment. I want to imitate him because I love being outdoors especially when I’m playing sports, hiking or backpacking. I feel he is a good role model for me because his devotion and loyalty to the Church is inspiring. I go to Mass every Sunday and hope to grow as close to God as he did. Saint Francis of Assisi is often portrayed with a bird in his hands because he said he was going to preach to his sisters the birds. When he did this, the birds surrounded him and not one flew away.
