Conflict In Homeless Bird

In Gloria Whelan’s Homeless Bird, a girl named Koly was forced into marriage. A conflict is the problem, usually most likely about war or disease. Koly did a good job in handling the situation, but after her husband’s death, she was forced to handle chores on her own. This was since her dowry didn’t help her husband from the Ganges river, and ended up dying. Koly could have taken her earrings with her, and leave her sass (mother-in-law) alone, but one day, she was rejected by her sass in Varanasi. “My husband died. I was brought here by my sass before she became a widow and was going to her brother’s house, where I was not wanted.” (Whelan 120)
Koly manages to survive in Varanasi, but she would have had the chance to decide what to do.
