Power without question is a major reason why conflict took place in Mean Girls and why it takes place in the real-world. Power is the structure of conflict and it is rare for people to feel as though they are equal, which leads to conflict (Hocker & Wilmot, 2014, p. 105). Furthermore, the fact that the conflict in Mean Girls led to an eruption of conflict and emotions, shows that this too can happen in the real-world. Trigger events
and destructive conflict both fuel conflict in a negative way and it gets to a point where nothing can be solved without a life changing event taking place, which in Mean Girls was the release of the burn book (Hocker &Wilmot, 2014, p. 35). Once conflict reached its peak, people were then able to forgive and reconcile so that they could move on, which also takes place in the real-world.
Finally, there is no doubt that in this day and age that media is a major influence of what takes place in our society. Major conflict topics, such as the election, what celebrities do, and killings are constantly talked about on the internet, social media, news, radio, etc. From what I have learned from Mean Girls and Interpersonal Conflict is that conflict spreads fast and everyone has their own opinion about it. Moreover, if a certain conflict is being shared or talked about, this increases people’s knowledge about the conflict, which only makes the conflict worse. Therefore, I have learned that since conflict gets spread so easily it is difficult to know what is true or false about a situation. In result, it is up to me to research the topic at hand and learn who is really at fault and who is not. As most of us know this did not take place in Mean Girls because once Cady confessed that the burn book was hers everyone believed her even though it was not actually hers.
