Conflict In Touching Spirit Bear

Touching Spirit Bear is a book about a teenager named Cole Matthews, who can’t control his anger. Cole attacks Peter Driscal and smashes his head on the sidewalk. Cole is going to go to jail, but Cole’s parole officer, Garvey, suggests the Native American Circle Justice. Cole is banished to an abandoned Alaskan island for one year. While he is there, a mysterious white bear called a Spirit Bear mauls Cole. Cole nearly died. After the attack Cole’s feelings really changed and he wasn’t nearly as angry as he used to be. He asks Garvey how he can fully change and Garvey said that the victim has to be healed. Cole wants Peter to come to the island so they both can change and heal. Peter is scared of Cole at first, but then Peter realizes he has changed. In the sequel, Ghost of Spirit Bear, Cole and Peter have to go back to Central
The conflicts in these novels are Cole has to fight and beat his anger in #1 and in #2 Cole’s high school is very rough and Cole and Peter have to make a change. Peter and Cole have to deal with difficulties in school. In Touching Spirit Bear, Cole and Peter didn’t get along because they couldn’t forgive each other when Cole smashed Peter’s head into the sidewalk. In the second book, Ghost of Spirit Bear, they overlook Cole’s attack on Peter and they are friends. That is a difference in these two writings. These novels are alike because some themes in the books are “never give up” and to “always forgive others.” In #1, Cole never gives up because he wants to overcome his anger and he forgave Peter and forgave his parents. In #2, Cole is always looking for ways to make a change to the violent Central Minneapolis High School and he never gave up. Cole gets beat up and so does Peter, and they learn to forgive Keith and others who picked on them. I thought that both novels were great reads and both provided a strong
