Individuals can become an outcast since they chose not to conform to the standards of his or her community, they can be labeled as an “outcast”, causing insecurity, and a lower self-esteem. Because of such high standards set by his community, Cyrano is chastised, “ Oh一These arrogant grand airs!一A clown who一look at him一not even gloves! No ribbons一no lace一no buckles on his shoes一” (Act 1, 32) In this scene Cyrano is ridiculed for not wearing the lavish attire worn by the majority of individuals attending the gathering. Although Cyrano’s low self-esteem seems to be caused by the negative statements of his peers, there is multiple contributors of a low self-esteem. In the play, De Guiche, one of the many antagonists, projects his low level of conformity through anger and vengeance. At first his plan is to force Roxane to marry Vicomte de Valvert, then he gets an opportunity and he decides to take Roxane for himself, “You love me then...Making my enemies your own…” (Act 3, 96) In this scene readers can see that his initial feeling was of being unloved since he did not own up to his feelings for Roxane. The pressure to meet conformity has lead to many people becoming someone they really are not. The stress and pressure causes a ripple effect in the human's mentality. Those who are not able to conform many sometimes end up committing suicide or living a life of
