Confucius Lives Next Door Review The book “Confucius Lives Next Door” is written by T.R. Reid based on his experience while he was living in Tokyo. "Confucius Lives Next Door," is an interesting book that held my attention throughout that gives you Reid’s first-hand insight into the differences between the East (mainly Japan) and the West societies. Reid goes in depth about Asian values, talks about harmony within the social environment, family and much more.

Within the chapter Reid tells us what I feel are some major differences like with weaponry. America calls Asia evil for selling weapons to terrorists when according to Reid “The United States is the world’s largest seller of weaponry. It earns thousands of times more money selling guns, warships, and fighter planes than we do.” (Reid, 218) This is an eye-opener for me because I no clue of these types of issues going on. Another story that gets to me is earlier in the chapter when Reid tells about a trial testimony. The “woman came to the door and was frightened by the teenager on her front step” (Reid, 213). In this story the woman’s husband rushed to her screams, yelled “Freeze” and shoots the young boy. This innocent boy dies while he was visiting from Japan and had no clue the meaning of “Freeze” in the circumstance he found himself in. I would say this falls back on the safety differences between the East and the West. These stories are so sad along with many others I am sure but this makes me ashamed to call America my …show more content…
Americans, maybe not all but I would say most people dread going to work, making jokes and comments about Mondays. In the East, people like going to work. They look for the joy in what they do every day; employees make their days even more enjoyable singing their company songs and showing their pride by wearing their company pins for all to see. The employees respect their superiors, bowing to demonstrate their respect. The work ethics is held highly in the East and I would have to contribute this to the learning of
