Congestive Heart Failure Heart failure is a general term used to describe several types of cardiac diseases which lead to poor perfusion of tissues. The American Heart Association defines congestive heart failure, as a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to the body's other organs. The “failing” heart is no longer working as efficient as it should. Management of congestive heart failure involves both pharmacological and non-pharmacological management. Maintenance and improvement of the quality of life is the priority in the plan of care. Management includes cardiac rehabilitation. Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program to ensure cardiac patients the best possible physical, mental and social functioning so that they may, by their own efforts, resume and maintain as normal a place as possible in the community (American Heart Association, World Health Organization, 2005).
