May, Magpie and Michael all share a connection with people to find a sense of identity through the choices they make to belong and not to belong. May feels lost and disconnected with lose of her mother. Her mother gave May her sense of self through her aboriginal heritage but through her suffering and exhaustion it was time for her “pain to be freed from her wrists.” May’s brother, Billy grew a close connection together but “when they lost their mother, they lost themselves”.
This relationship slowly drifted apart. The character of Aunty takes on the role of mother. Aunty finds herself being addicted to alcohol and gambling very fast with the help of her new “boyfriend or what ever she confused him to be.” May felt like she didn’t belong in her own home all she had was her brother Billy who’s connection was strong until he left May with “ his heart bleeding before the world even got to him, before he could even swallow air.’
This use of a metaphor shows the heart being weakened by his mother’s death. May sees her brother once more taken over by drugs; she “did not know her brother.” May’s broken bond with Billy making her feel disconnected from her family and her culture. May meets different people along her journey to find her identity but it always leads her back to Billy. Billy eventually stops taking drugs and their bond is present once again.
