Connor Beaton defines a real man to show emotion and express feelings. In today's society, a real man should suppress their emotions but Connor Beaton thinks a real man should be able to be emotional. Beaton states,”What emotional resilience actually requires is for you to experience, articulate, express, and occasionally release them. The sad truth is that most boys and men are taught not to feel, to be emotionally suppressed” (Beaton 9:16). When men began to express their emotions and show vulnerability, then men can began to open up to each other. So men can be able to feel and release the emotions that have been contained for years . If men keep suppressing emotions it will only lead to depression
and loneliness. Then, Connor talks about when he was at a mentorship program where he meets a boy that feels loving someone is feminine and a real man does not express that emotion. Connor says, “He had been taught to suppress instead of feel. My heart was moved for the loss of this poor kid. I hugged him and he broke down”( Beaton 13:10). Connor shows through the young boy not wanting to express emotion, a real man will show emotion as he hugged the boy and comfort him. The boy had been taught through a male figure to suppress emotions because it shows to be weak. However, through Connor’s gesture of hugging him, it teaches him to express emotions physically. At last come to the end, men need to convey vulnerability and opening more through their emotions and feelings that have been suppressed.
