Consequences Of Ageism In Healthcare

Often based off illogical assumptions, ageism not only has a significant physical and psychological impact but has a ripple effect on society. Ageism contributes to a loss of dignity and proper treatment, and it impacts newly practicing healthcare providers. The articles are written by Torres and Willekes outline the consequences of ageism, and what can be done to break the cycle. In the article written by Torres, ageism is described as, “a social determinant of health, creating disparate access, care and outcomes for older individuals” (Kagan & Melendez-Torres, 2015, pg 647). In Willeke’s article, nurses stated, “every patient over the age of 65 should be an automatic no code,” and “we should be saving the resources for the young” (Willekes, 2015, pg. 37). This relationship between health and ageism is evidently a dangerous one. The difference in the standard of care healthcare providers give older clients impacts healthcare needs of older adults significantly. Instead of resources being given to the most in need patient, ageism determines the course of action. This practice is unsafe, as ageism doesn’t determine health. In Torres’ article, a concern is that nursing education may steer students away from pursuing interests in older adult care, by prioritizing other specialties. Willeke’s mentor had a passion for older adult care, enriching her experience as a student nurse. Nursing students view their mentors as role models and use their experience to guide their learning. Mentors who engage in ageism may spread those behaviours and beliefs, causing a cycle that is difficult to break. Positive experiences with older adult clients may inspire students to pursue the avenue of older clients even if it was not the area of healthcare they expected to go in
