A. Calavita’s (1996) ‘“Balanced-Budget Conservatism’ and the Symbolism of Proposition 187”
Proposition 187 influenced the rest of the nation in terms of this concept called nativism. Nativism is used to describe this defensive merit of nationalism. You can be nationalistic and love your country, but when you have a defensive, aggressive nature about the way in which you feel about that nationalism then it is nativism. The article is important because it signals the most reasonable way of nativism that we are still in now. Introduction
a. Thesis Paraphrase: Calavita’s (1996) in her article titled ‘“Balanced-Budget Conservatism’ and the Symbolism of Proposition 187” explores why the latest round of nativism reflected in Proposition 187 focused solely on immigrants as a tax burden and how “balanced- budget conservatism” and the socio-economic dissatisfaction are embodied in Proposition 187, by drawing two sources of literature: the “crisis of Fordism” in the late twentieth century and the literature on symbolic politics to argue that the proposition is a symbolic statement with appeal beyond just California that is grounded in prevailing economic conditions.
