“Want-Creation Fuels Americans’ Addictiveness” is a confusing title as much as the essay belonging to it. In the essay, which initially appeared in the St. Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch, Author Philip Slater poorly emphasizes that American society has contributed and amplified Americans’ addiction behavior. The article is initially engaging to a reader, however, the transitions between topics can lose the reader’s interest because of the ambiguity. Slater also brings good points for the reader to consider but he fails to correlate them together in a manner that could easily identifiable. Slater is also unclear as to the intention of his argument by his manner of bringing up irrelevant issues that are present in American society. Ultimately, the poor organization and Slater’s inability to show the relationship between the examples given make this essay difficult to read and difficult to comprehend the purpose for which it was written for.…
Ray Bradbury’s “The Sound of Thunder” and Gloria Skurzynski’s “Nethergrave” are both good science fiction stories. These stories are both about scientific technology changing the life of a certain person, although there are a few different themes in these stories. In, “The Sound of Thunder,” Eckells has a rude awakening when he realizes that he will be facing harsh consequences due to the fact that he didn’t obey the few rules that were given at the beginning of his journey. In “Nethergrave,” Jeremy chooses to revolve his life around the virtual world, rather than the real world where he is constantly bullied and usually feeling embarrassed, abandoned and sometimes hurt. However, both of these characters are rather similar, as they are both being selfish in an unselfish way without realizing that they are in fact being selfish. Both of these stories revolve around the effect certain choices have on others’ future and even your own future.…
In the essay, "The Back of The Bus,” author Mary Mebane shares an usual ride in a bus on a Saturday morning she had which inspires her. The purpose of writing this essay is using her personal experience to demonstrate what it was like and how people were able to overcome their struggle for equal rights under legal segregation.…
I believe Margaret Drabble’s statement, “Our desire to conform is greater than our respect for objective facts,” to be quite true. Throughout history, people of all ages have wanted to be accepted and belong to a group rather than look at the facts and measure what is true and false. It is very evident in our society today that not only do we want to be accepted and belong, but we also are willing to do whatever it takes, no matter what the consequences turn out to be. I agree with Drabble’s statement and believe that it is true all around the world. If you were to step outside our society and look back at it objectively, I can assure you that you would see evidence of this.…
That really depends on the peer. I don’t mind others giving me feedback and I think that every feedback is in some way positive.…
Remember, your profession is different than your job. At times we, as nurses, may tend to talk negatively about the nursing profession because we do not like where we work, and that you have control over. There is no question that nursing is a tough profession, both physically and mentally, and that with changes in the economy and the pressures of health care reform, the work environment will become even more challenging.…
This semester has had a lot of work especially in English II, but I’m glad it was like that because I have learned a lot in my English class. I’ll be talking about a few things that I learned this semester. Like discrimination, debating, and how to convince people to change their mind about something.…
The thing I enjoyed most about this assignment was the actual reading of the petition. I had never known this existed, and love history!…
Validation is a very useful communication skill for your professional and personal life. I surprised myself that I have not thought of this perspective prior to now. Simply put, a person will not be comfortable and open to your comments until they feel they have been heard and understood. Wow! That makes perfect sense once you digest this thought. In a lot of settings, professional and personal, we are listening to another’s comments but not always digesting their feelings. I can find myself thinking of how to solve their issue or how to make their situation better. If I do not allow their comments to sit for a moment before I respond, the other person(s) might not believe I truly understand them or their need. It is so often in our professional setting we encounter repetitive situations and therefore already know a solution or a suggested solution. If the other party does not feel I am actively listening and considering what I am being told they are not going to receive my response fully because they feel they have not been heard. “Validation affirms that the nurse is both listening and hearing. If affirms that the individual and the relationship are important to the nurse even in the presences of disagreement.” (Harvey, 144) Think about it. If…
The skills I had developed up until this point further evolved in the AP (Advanced Placement) English class I attended during my senior year. AP English was the most challenging literature class I took during my time in high school; it was also the most enjoyable and rewarding. We read literary works such as “The Poisonwood Bible” by Barbara Kingsolver; “The Invisible Man” by Ralph Waldo Emerson; “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley; “The Things They Carried” by ???; and “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen. Although the reading load was rather intense, I especially enjoyed applying the critical analysis skills I had developed up to this point to these novels. It is difficult to establish which book was my favorite to read and interpret; I found each to be eloquently written and representative of realistic life situations, both contemporary and historical.…
I actually really enjoyed my peer review. My group was, for the most part, very constructive in their feedback. I did not see most of the problems that my group noticed, so I was able to get better…
There are ten rules to live by to achieve ENFJ success, which I absolutely love. They go as follow: feed your strength, face your weaknesses, express your feelings, make decisions, smile at criticism, be aware of others, be aware of yourself, be gentle in your expectations, assume the best, and when in doubt, ask questions! The two rules that I can apply to my life experiences are smile at criticism and feed your strength. However, some of these rules go hand in hand with each other. Such as when it comes to criticism you smile and assume for the best instead of thinking negatively. Sometimes I find myself to get offended at criticism, it’s a normal reaction. Being in a design major, we have weekly critiques but the outcome of them help strengthen my work. It’s a matter of encouraging growth and being content with the development…
Nowadays there are plenty of motivation theories which give a great opportunity for employers to use the human capital more effectively. However, it is very important to understand that a theory that works in one country not necessarily will work in another one. To prove it, I would like to show an example by comparing the motivation degree of middle managers from Sweden and Russia as a result of using the same motivation tools. As an example I would like to use Maslow’s Need Theory and my hypothesis is: Salary level is a more important motivating factor for Russian middle managers than for Swedish managers.…
