Definition of health:-
Parker(2005) states that health is multidimensional. Traditionally, health has been defined in terms of the presence or absence of disease.
Nightingale define health as a state of being well aid using every power of the individual possess to the fullest extent: who takes a more holistic view of health. it defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social weal being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. it is over half a century when the who defines health as such. this definition reflects concern for the individual …show more content…
as a total person functioning, physically, psychologically, and socially. mental processes determine the people’s relationship with their physical and social surroundings aid their interaction with others. health as defined in this context is a state of physical, mental and social functioning that realizes a person’s potential health is a individual’s responsibility but it requires collective action to ensure a society aid al environment in which people can act responsibly. the culture aid belief of the people can also influence health. health can be measurable in process aid outcome this definition is applicable across the life span particular for older adults whose functional abilities may determine needed services. the explanation of who’s definition of health places health in the context of environment. people’s lives and therefore there health are affected by everything they interact with- not only environmental influences such as climate aid the availability of a nutritious food, comfortable shelter, clean air to breathe, and pure water to drink but also other people, including family, lovers, employers, coworkers, friend and associates of various kinds. this definition equates health with productive aid creative living. it focuses on the living state rather than on categories of disease that may cause illness or death. health is not a condition, it is an adjustment, not a state but a process. the process adapts the individual not only to our physical but also to our environments. this definition emphasizes health as an adaptive process rather than a state. in 1980, the American nurses association (ANA) defines health in its social policy as a dynamic state of being in which the developmental and behavioral potential of an individual is realized to the fullest extent possible.
According to Ewles and Simestt (2004) they classified a concept of health as identifying different dimensions in the concept of health which they described as
Physical health:- this is perhaps the most obvious dimension of health and is concerned with the mechanistic functioning of the body.
Mental health:- by mental health we means the ability to think clearly and coherently . it must be distinguished from emotional and social health, although there is a close association between the three
Social health:- social health means the ability to make and maintain relationships with other people.
According to Parker (2005), the scientific foundation of mental health is not clear. psychologist mentioned that a mentally healthy person is free from internal conflicts i.e
A) he is not at “war” with himself.
B) he is well adjusted that is he is able to get along well with others.
C) he accepts criticism and is not easily upset
D) he searches for identity
E) he has a strong sense of self esteem
F) he faces problems and tries to solve them intelligently, i.e coping with anxiety
G) he knows himself, his needs, problems and goals.
H) he has a good self control. he can balance rationality and emotionality
SOCIAL HEALTH—social well being implies harmony and integration within the individual, between each individual and-the members of the society and between individuals and the world in which they live.
The social dimension of health includes the level of social skills that one possesses, social functioning and the ability to see oneself as a member of a large society.
Social health takes into account that every individual is part of a family. and of wider community and focuses on social and economical conditions and well being of the whole person in the context of his social network. social health is rooted in positive material environment
1 PERSONAL CONTEXT:-
Health to me personally means the relative absence of discomfort and pain is a continuous adaptation to the environment to ensure optimal functions the professional in the field of health.
some views of a freedom from medically defined disease and disability. the identification of different aspects of reaction is a useful exercise in raising awareness of the complexity of the concept of health in practice it is obvious that dividing people’s lives into categories such as “physical’’ and ‘’mental” often imposes artificial divisions and unhelpful distortions on a situation i believe that all aspects of health are interrelated and interdependent. the notion of health as the foundation for achieving human potential has so much to offer me as a health worker. it recognizes that health is a dynamic state, that each person’s potential is different and that each person’s health needs are different working for health as both an individual and a societal responsibility and involves comparing people to improve their quality of …show more content…
life.
1.2 SOCIAL CONTEXT:- social health means the ability to make the ability to make and maintain relationships with other people. socio economic changes within the populations equivocally influence the lay concepts of health provision of personal health services must be informed by environmental health environmental pollution is a complex and increasingly hazard problem. disease related to social life, industry and technologies like asthma and trauma, have become important threats to health. the physical and psychological stresses of a rapidly changing and fast paced society present daily problems such as economic pressure and poor health habits. obesity, purity attributed to a lack of exercise and increasing foods portion size, is a growing health issue.
1.3 APPLICATION TO CURRENT JOB:-the responsibility of nurses as health professionals today call for seeing the health problem in new ways and helping others to do the same. The way individuals define health and health problems is important, because definition influences attempts to improve health and care delivery. health is a substance balance between internal and external forces. health allows people to move through life free from the of illness and allow reality to take place.
1.4 CURRENT RESEARCH :- the national institute of nursing research (2004) supports research to establish. Scientific base for the care of individuals throughout the life span. the themes identified are:
• changing lifestyle behaviors for better health.
• managing the effects of chronic illness to improve health and quality of life.
• identifying effective strategies to reduce health disparities.
CONCEPT 2:- INDIVIDUAL HEALTH
This concept is taken from module 2 subtopic1
According Avdrey &Shirlee (2012), dimension of individuality include the person’s total character, self identity and perception. to help clients attain maintain or regain an optimal level of health, nurses need to understand clients as individuals. nurses are expected to plan and assess care for three types of clients the individual, family and community care of the individual is enhanced when nurse understands the concept of individuality, holism homeostasis, human needs and system theory each individual is a unique being who is different from every other human being, with a different genetic make up, life experiences and environmental interactions.
the beliefs and values of each person and the support they receive come in large part from the family and they are reinforced by the community. dimension of individuality involves:
• the person’s total character which includes the habits, abilities, appearances, values, motive, attitude, emotional state and behavior
• the person’s perception is the way the person interprets the environment or situation, directly affecting how or situation directly affecting how he or she thinks feels and act in any given situation.
• the individuals self identity encompasses perception of self as a separate and distinct entity alone and in interactions with others concept of holism:- kozier et al (2012) states that if it is applied is nursing, the concept of holism emphasizes that nurses must keep the whole person in mind and strive to understand how one area of concern relates to the whole
person. nurses are concerned with the individual as a whole, complete, or holistic person not as an assembly of parts and processes. the term holistic and holism are derived from the Greek word meaning “whole” the term holistic was coined by jan smiths. in holistic theory, a living organism is seen as an interacting, unified whole that is more than the more sum of it parts the concept of homeostasis was first introduced by cannon(1939) to describe by relative constancy of the internal process of the body such as blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, blood pressure, body temperature blood glucose, fluid and electrolytes balance. homeostasis is the tendency of the body to maintain a state of balance or equilibrium while continually changing. physiological homeostasis means that the internal environment of the body is relatively stable and constant. all cell of the body require a relatively constant environment to function: thus the body’s internal environment must be maintained within narrow limits. homeostasis mechanisms have four main characteristics
1. They are compensatory
2. They are self regulating
3. They tend to be regulated by negative feedback systems.
4. They may require several feedback mechanisms to correct only one physiological imbalance. individuals can be compared with a representing group.
2.1 PERSONAL CONTEXT:-
As a nurse i believe that individuals can be compared with a representative group of people of the same point in time. it has been described as a unified or multidimensional process involving the well being of the individual person in the context of his environment.
2.2 SOCIAL CONTEXT:- the holistic model recognizes the strength of social, economic, political and environmental, influences on health. this approach implies that all sector of society have an effect on health, in particular, agriculture, animal husbandry, food, industry, education etc
2.3 –APPLICATION TO CURRENT JOB: nurses need to focus on the client within both a total care and an individual care context. in my hospital, nurses individualize the care given to clients’ this makes the nurses to become ( ) with the client as on individual. we should refer to the total care principles and these principles are used to apply to the individual client. as for the concept of holism, nurses are concerned with the individual as a whole complete or holistic person not as an assembly of parts and processes. this helps us to use the nursing diagnosis successfully.
2.4 CURRENT RESEARCHES:
