Contracting 2.0641 Grams Of Sallicylic Acid
The conventional method was conducted by placing 2.0641 grams of salicylic acid in a dry 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask. In a fume hood, 4 mL of acetic anhydride and 5 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid were added to the flask. The contents were swirled in the flask and then heated for 20 minutes in a hot water bath. After the 20 minutes were up, 10 mL of cold water were added in 1 mL increments. The flask was cooled for 10 minutes and occasionally stirred. The crystals that formed were collected via filtration and weighed a week later to let the excess liquid evaporate. The variation to the experiment was using a different heat source, the microwave. Percent yield was found by weighing the watch glass with the filter paper and subtracting the total from the original weight. The TLC test was conducted by placing sample products on a TLC plate. Next, the plate was put in solvent mixture of 80% heptane and 20% ethyl acetate. The solvent mixture was allow to rise ⅔ the height of the plate and then placed under UV light to observe the distance the samples traveled. The ferric chloride test was administered by placing 1 mL of ethanol and 1 drop of 1% by mass ferric chloride solution to four test tubes. Crystals of the synthesized product were added to the first test tube. Salicylic acid was added to the second test tube. To the third test tube, crystals of pure acetylsalicylic acid were added. The test tubes were mixed. For the analysis of the synthesized acetylsalicylic acid, 0.4 grams of synthesised acetylsalicylic acid and 10 mL of 1.0 M NaOh were added to a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask and heated on a hot plate. The contents of the flask were transferred to a 250 mL flask and water was added to fill the flask. The flask was inverted numerous times. From the 250 ml flask, a 1.00 mL sample was pipetted out and placed into a 25 mL flask. The 0.020 M Fe3+- HCl - KCl solution, the solution was diluted and mixed.     A reflux condenser was assembled using a 25-mL round-bottom flask, hot plate, and aluminum block. It was equipped with a drying tube filled with calcium chloride to control vapors. Approximately 2.5 mL of isopentyl alcohol was massed and placed in the round-bottom flask that contained a stir bar. Using the same graduated cylinder, about 3.5 mL of glacial acetic acid was added to the flask. A calibrated Pasteur pipet was used to add 0.5 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid to the flask and the flask was mixed immediately. The flask was connected to the apparatus and covered with aluminum foil to help retain heat. Using rubber tubing, water was circulated into the lower attachment and out the top attachment and the mixture was brought to a boil.
