The purpose of our experiment was to synthesize aspirin from acetyl anhydride, salicylic acid, and sulfuric acid. And then determine the relative purity of the synthesized sample. The procedure performed in our experiment involved chemically reacting salicylic acid and acetic anhydride in order to form acetyl salicylic acid. The limiting reactant in this chemical reaction was salicylic acid, with acetic anhydride present in excess in order to react with any water produced during the reaction of the reactants, and thus improves the yield of aspirin. Theoretical yield is 2.88 g aspirin and the percent yield of the preparation of aspirin was 75.0%. By obtaining the percent yield of the synthesis process it was able to infer some conclusions regarding the efficiency of the techniques performed. Determining the relative percent yield and attained the actual yield of prepared aspirin was very important to calculate the percent yield. The chemical reaction and production of salicylic acid was used to comprehend the stated concepts.
Introduction
The objective of this experiment was to synthesize acetyl salicylic acid (aspirin) from salicylic acid and acetic anhydride and then determine the purity of the samples. And it was a useful method for calculating the limiting reactant. To prepare aspirin, salicylic acid is reacted with an excess of acetic anhydride. A small amount of a strong acid is used as a catalyst which speeds up the reaction. In this experiment, sulfuric acid will be used as the catalyst. The excess acetic acid will be quenched with the addition of water. The aspirin product is not very soluble in water so the aspirin product will precipitate when water is added. This excess acetic acid in the presence of sulfuric acid was needed in order to determine the percent yield. In this case the molar ratio was very important in which the amount of each starting material would be able to produce only a certain e. The consumption of the limiting reactant has been fully consumed to produce aspiring.

While performing the lab experiments in the first unit, my observation included finding the appropriate tools in the kit in order to carry out the tasks. These experiments really showed me how to differentiate the types of tools we are using and understand the differences and reason for the differences in each. In this experiment, acetylsalicylic acid was synthesized from the acidification of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. The objective was to convert a specific amount of salicylic acid into the same amount of aspirin that was high in purity. Furthermore, the other objectives were to enable students to conduct the synthesis of aspirin, reinforce skills or recrystallisation and the technique of melting point determination. The amount of each compound should be the same because there is a 1:1 ratio between them. The purity of the synthesized aspirin was measured by determining its melting point and percent yield. Soluble impurities increase the range over which a compound melts and often decreases its overall melting point temperature1. If the experiment went as expected, a pure sample of aspirin with a high percent yield would have been obtained. The percent yield obtained was 56.1% and the melting point was 134.7- 136.8.…

Aspirin is the common name for the compound acetylsalicylic acid, widely used as a fever reducer and as a pain killer. The first part of the experiment aims to synthesize aspirin from the reaction of salicylic acid with acetic anhydride with the aid of phosphoric acid as a catalyst. The second part of the experiment aims to assess the purity of aspirin through the determination of its melting point and comparing it to the accepted value. An oil bath was used in the determination of the melting point. Results showed 79.56% yield of impure aspirin. It was also determined that its melting point range is about 125˚C - 130˚C while that of the pure aspirin is about 130˚C – 134.5˚C which is closer to the accepted value, 136˚C. The latter also has a narrower range which shows that it really is purer than the crude one, although not pure enough when compared with commercial aspirin.…

Procedure. 0.211g of dry salicylic acid was placed into a dry 5-mL conical vial, and dissolved in 0.480 mL of acetic anhydride and one drop of concentrated phosphoric acid in a hot water bath of 50oC. The mixture was heated and stirred for 10 minutes and then allowed to cool. The conical vial was placed into a small beaker and allowed to cool so that the acetylsalicylic acid would crystallize from the reaction mixture. The acetylsalicylic acid crystallized. Next, 3.0mL of water was added and stirred with a microspatula. The crystals were removed and collected in a Hirsch funnel through vacuum filtration. The crystals were dried overnight on a watch glass. The crystals were then weighed to calculate the percentage yield. The ferric chloride test was performed to test the purity. After the aspirin was found pure, the melting point was taken.…
