A women given the name “Detroit Freezer Mom” was put on trial a year after killing two out of her five children. This was a heinous and sick crime of filicide. Her story was rather chilling as to why she did it. Thesis: Though many psychologists have different perspectives on why parents commit child homicide, as a society we need to reduce child abuse, improve mental health care and provide financial and emotional support for parents and most importantly, young single mothers. II. Body
Psychologists have different views on child homicide.
Parents who kill kids not always insane (Electa Daper). infanticide associated with mental illness (Margaret G. Spinelli, M.D). types of maternal filicide (savana chanz 23-29). B. paying attention to signs of abuse or a child in danger is the first step in prevention recognizing the signs of abuse (Melinda Smith, M.A., and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D.). in China, due to overpopulation, people want a son to carry on the family name, and are limited to only 2 kids per household (BBC ethics).
Publisher says, postpartum depression is a common disorder after birth, but if continuous, can escalate to dangerous levels. (Moms who kill 1-9). C. improving mental health care for ill mothers

cases mothers’ suffering might be so severe that they may even commit suicide” (Maternal Mental health 4-5).
“Good mental health is an important part of women's health overall” (women's health gov.).
Mental illness linked to child homicide are schizophrenia, psychosis, and depression (Janice wood, psychcentral). D. There isn't enough help out here for single parents single mothers may be at a higher risk for mental health issues ( Lisa La Rose, M.A., L.P.C, Challenges for single mothers). Single moms can find little relief from chronic stress (David Templeton, Loads of stress)
Depression, poverty, and parenting can be a dangerous combination for children (Vanessa Harbin, Research Analyst, Samantha Goldhagen, Research Assistant) Conclusion: More and more child homicide cases happen because people are not shedding light on such a serious topic, and are ignoring young single parents with mental illness or strange patterns after they have children. Mental illness doesn’t broadly show but there are many signs to recognize an unstable parent or an endangered child.
Claim: Improving mental healthcare for women undergoing psychosis or depression can help reduce the risk of filicide abundantly.
There are various reasons filicide takes place, but the main reason is commonly known as Postpartum depression, or even mental illnesses that were already there.
By improving mental healthcare for women, we can reduce the amount of children being murdered every year. Identifying one's mental health problems and helping them see their issue is a good start in prevention (maternal mental health). This article states different ways they can improve women's mental health after childbirth and how women react to treatment. I feel as though, if they push the issue and really try to help women through their depression and psychosis, we can reduce the chances of them harming themselves or their
children.
Paragraph 1
Claim: One should be able to notice when a child is in dangerous living situations by paying attention to signs such as, an unstable parent, or if the child has bruises or anything that looks as if he/she is going through physical abuse.
While signs are not always there, there are ways people can tell if a child may be in danger due to having an unstable or mentally ill parent. Some cases where parents have physically harmed their child explains how the parent often talked about harmful actions before pursuing them, however no one tried to prevent it from taking place because they felt the parent was not serious. Sometimes, obsessive compulsive disorders can cause one to harm their child by having obsessive thoughts of hurting their child and the compulsiveness may cause a parent to act on these thoughts. In this example, a woman is suffering from a common depression that occurs after childbirth, Postpartum Depression. Which is not taken as serious as it should be. “a thirty-year-old woman who was reportedly suffering from severe postpartum depression was charged this month with first-degree murder in the suffocation death of her eight-month-old son in February of this year.” If she had more help and stability, this could have been avoided.
