The book Conversion was written by Katherine Howe. I chose this book because I thought the illustration on the front of the book was interesting as well as the summary provided in the cover. I thought the storyline was interesting and I was intrigued on how the author would tie a little bit of history in with the modern times.
The Setting
The book is a mixture of two time periods and two places. One time period is set in Salem Village, Massachusetts from May 1706 to August 1706. The second time period is set in Danvers, Massachusetts from January 2012 to June 2012. Both settings are told from the point of view of two young women including Ann Putnam and Colleen Rowley.
The Characters
This story involved two main characters. The first in Salem Village is being told by Ann Putnam’s point of view. The second in Danvers is being told from Colleen Rowley’s point of view. Ann Putnam is an average girl in a small village who becomes accused of being a witch. She then is pulled in by another girl of her village to pretend to have an illness. She doesn’t feel right about it in the beginning but she begins to get caught up in the attention and really starts to use it to her advantage. Soon she begins to actually suffer from the illness and the symptoms and no longer has to pretend. Her village then accuses her a being a witch. The story from Colleen Rowley’s point of view also begins with her living her life per usual. Then students from her school begin to suffer from a strange illness that no one can quite figure out. More and more of her classmate begin to suffer from the illness and soon so does she. It is not until she reads The Crucible, a play about the Salem Witch Trials, that she figures out what is going on to the girls attending her
