The crucible is a suspenseful play written by Arthur Miller that tells the story of the witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. The play delvers many scenes of love, hate, manipulation, and revenge. Abigail Williams is a young woman in the town of Salem who during these trials is the initial perpetrator and cause of this dilemma. Since the death of her parents, Abigail has felt alone. Abigail seeks to fine affection and contentment from her yearning companion John Proctor. As a result of her desire to be loved by John, Abigail seeks revenge on his wife Elizabeth, therefore, contriving the deceit of the witch trials in the town. Salem is known for its high respect of God and his word. Demonic acts such as witchcraft are unfathomable to the people here, but Abigail finds a way to contradict their convictions. The town has no way of justifying their innocence so many of them give up on home. John is one of the few who refuses to give in, “You will not use me! I am no Sarah Good or Tituba, I am John Proctor! You will not use me! It is no part of salvation that you should use me!”(211). Since John does not surrender to her sinister ways he too is on trial for being involved in witchcraft. Once Abigail realizes what she has done, she decides to vanish town after robbing her Uncle Parris. Although Abigail is no longer around and John along with countless others has been hung, the witch trials still continue and crimeless suspects remain in the line for death.
