that she has a thirst for power. This can be traced back to, when it was revealed early in the play, the affair she once had with John Proctor. As a consequence, she was fired as the Proctor’s maid. The whole chaos started when Abigail, among others, were seen allegdly dancing naked conduing love potions and charms. Abigail couldve came clean and told the whole truth but instead refuses and orders the other girls not to say a word, as it could damage their reputation and bring legal charges against them. Only until she is questioned by Rev. Hale, does she misdirect the truth and accuses Tituba of forcing her into drinking blood. Abigail: “She forced me to drink blood!”. This only leads to a increasingly unstable situation as Abigail realizes the power at her disposal. She accuses multiple people in the crucible and the judges believe her because of the so called “spectral evidence”. She accuses Sarah Osbourne and Sara Good but also accuses John proctors wife, which is a significant strike to John as he antagonizes the so called witchcraft. This was a act of rivalry because Abigail thought that Proctor still had feelings for her but luckily he turned her down. The reasons why Abigail could've started using her spectral evidence to help the judges convict the convicted was because that's the power she had, as her reputation was already ruined by the affair and she was only ever a maid, her sole reputation comes as being the niece of Reverend Parris. As far as accusations go, Abigail was not the only one who helped spread out the drama and paranoia that gripped the town.In fact, partial blame has to be placed on the Deputy Governor Danforth himself.
As he, among others, believed “the bewitched” and convicted many individuals in a strikingly similar yet different manner that they did. However, Danforth is not a fabulist, he may be portrayed in The crucible as a wicked or cruel man but he is a daresay a honest one who believed that he was acting as if he was guided by God. He brought all of the people who declared the good charachter of Martha, Elizabeth, and Rebecca before the church even after Francis had promised that no harm would come to the people associated with the declaration. Yet, Danforth did listen to the evidence that Proctor presented in court, the evidence being that Abigail and the rest were fabricating the whole situation about being possessed. Proctor openly admits about his infedility to the court, back then since it was a puritan village; this would’ve been considered a crime and critically damaged Proctor’s reputation. But, Danforth realizes that this might become a problem and wonders if its a lie to save goody Proctor, he then calls her into the room and tries to debunk the underlying matter.Danforth questioned her” Did your husband commit the act of lechery? Goody Proctor responded with a definitive but quiet ” no”; Since, Goody Proctor did not confess to save her husband’s reputation, she along
with Proctor are sentenced to be hanged. Proctor however, receives one final way out and that is to sign the written confession of his name, he does not sign it and is therefore hanged for defeding his innonecne. Even after everything, there is still some blame to be delivered to another charachter in the play and Tituba is worthy of that cause. Even though, she might not of convicted any people at all, it is still important to remember that she was one of the ones that started this whole paranoia and fear of witches. As she openly admitted that she practiced black magic when Abigail blamed her for the unconsiouneds of Betty; Abigail: “She comes to me every night to go and drink blood!” Tituba: “You beg me to conjure! She beg me make charm—” Abigail:” Don't lie! She comes to me while I sleep; she's always making me dream corruptions!”. Consequently, the reverends and the townspoeple began in favor of Abigail as she is supposedly the victim in the situation. Because Tituba confessed, there was now enough evidence that there are indeed witches throughout the town, each binded to a book solely carried by the devil in which contains the signatures of the ones it has condemned.
