Manifest Destiny was mainly a selfish and egotistical ideal that inspired Americans to flock westward during the 1840s. The term is defined as the belief that westward expansion was the God-given right of Americans, even their duty, to spread their population to the West all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was extremely damaging to several parties who found themselves in the path of the hordes of migrants, yet Americans came to be pompous and arrogant, considering their democratic lifestyles better than any other in the world. Blinding themselves to the injustices of their expansion, America spread west.
The motivations for Westward Expansion were fivefold. One was land hunger. And tons of poor farmers and other people headed west to find richer, more fertile land. Economic reasons also spurred the American people. Lacking present day trade routes such as the Panama Canal, they moved to the western coast to trade with China. Finally, nationalism inspired expansion. Feeling that their American society was the greatest, Americans desired to expand their great nation and win land for America and her ideals. Although they had logical reasons to expand, the supporters of Manifest Destiny completely disregarded the sacrifices that other non-Americans would have to make. The most important of these were the Native Americans. Having already been booted westward by Andrew Jackson in the early 19th century, Native Americans were further devastated by white expansion due to Manifest Destiny. For one, they lost sacred lands that had belonged to their tribes for centuries. In addition, whites massacred the buffalo population, a main food source for the Native Americans.
