'Cool At 13, Adrift At 23'
Does society think young kids should be going out on a Saturday night with no parental supervision? In the article “Cool at 13, Adrift at 23” by Jan Hoffman, states that teenagers at 13 are going out to friends houses drinking and doing drugs. These 13 year old teens think they are super cool for doing drugs and drinking six packs of beers on a Saturday night. In addition to the article “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers is a fictional story about a homeless man named Lemon Brown taught a kid named Greg to not do bad things in life. Both stories, “Cool at 13, Adrift at 23” and “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” are both about how someone can become a decent person by learning from one another.
Someone can become a decent human being by learning from one another's mistakes. For starters, Walter Dean Myers states on page 20 that Greg met a homeless man named Lemon Brown, Lemon Brown talked to greg about his past and what has happened. He taught Greg about his past life and his mistakes in life. Lemon Brown thinks Greg could learn from Lemon Brown’s mistakes.

In paragraph 3 it states that “Joseph P. Allen professor is a psychology at the university of Virginia.” This shows that Dr. Allen tried to admit that these teenagers are still living their middle school world. Furthermore, this also illustrates that Dr. Allen said that these teenagers aren’t socially competent yet. But, Jan Hoffman explains in paragraph 6 that B. Bradford Brown is a professor of educational psychology at the university of Wisconsin-Madison. This shows that she is a writer who writes about adolescent peer relationships and was not involved in the study, she said “It offered a trove of data.” Moreover, this exemplifies that what he found surprised him, he said that pseudomature behavior was adolescent. All in all, the study was followed by a diverse group of 184 subjects in

In the summer of 1996, The Frontline Documentary The Lost Children of Rockdale County investigated what happens when teenagers did not have enough supervision from their parents at home. The documentary took a place in the town of Conyers that is located 15 miles East of Atlanta. In this town, the majority of these teenagers come from wealthy families of a middle class. They did not seem to suffer from economic problems because their parents spend most of their time away from home working. Since they did not have anyone who paid attention or controlled them, they took advantage of their freedom in attending more parties, drinking, or having sex at an early age. Many of these events occurred because they were looking for something to do on the…

As humans we make mistakes, but the real power is learning from our mistakes. Often we can learn from others mistakes that way we don’t have to feel the pain ourselves to understand why we shouldn’t do something or be a certain way. Also we can learn from history and past mistakes that lead them into bad times and disputes. From literature we learn morals and lessons through the characters position. “We live with our archetypes, but can we live in them?” rightly said by Poul Anderson.…

When discussing with the the adolescents, she would always ask engaging questions that could be only be given Since she really was focused and attentive to the subject matter she wanted to write about. In addition she would notice things like the types of lies teenagers tell, their examples of lies, and their consistency of always lying that it's a skill. Her watchful manner can be perceived from when she says that, I asked if there were some type of liars’ club or workshop teenagers attend to learn such a skill”(paragraph four),”…I know when I hear some of those flamboyant, outlandish and outrageous lies”(paragraph seven), and finally when she says ‘’ I asked the teens what were some of the best lies they have ever told. There was no shortage of examples”( paragraph sixteen).Obviously, she is very observant because she is noticing things about the teens in her article that many people don't pay attention to or just don't think about, she observes that since they lie in a great manner there must be some type of club or workshop to acquire the knowledge to lie so much, and also since she watches juveniles so much she can decipher lies and know when their bizarre and wildly…

Anyway, things were planned so well as far as my daughter was concerned but I was not happy with the plans and she was to be home at her curfew on the weekend, midnight. Not happy at all, she did come home just after midnight. No she did not understand why and she just wanted to have fun with her friends. I DO understand but all the following questions popped up. First how can there be drugs and alcohol at each and every party we hear about in this day of age? Where are the police? What are parents thinking to allow kids especially underage to drink at home? How can drinking at home be just okay? Do you realize kids are at school everyday stoned/high and even become stoned or high at school? Scary but true.…

Have you ever lived in a small town with nothing to do and no one around? I have many times and one time I decided to get into my uncle’s alcohol cabinet. I decided to try some and I liked it and the way it felt so decided to drink some more and I agree it was a nice feeling until the next morning. The next morning, I had a bad hangover when I woke up. That night was fun and adventurous also I went out into the woods and shot my first fox that night because it was attacking our chickens. The point of my story is that there aren’t many things to do in a small town to get a thrill so you do things like what me and many other people who live in a small town. Although some believe that the drinking age should remain the same, I believe that it should be lowered to 18 because it will diminish the thrill of breaking the law, we can do other important things when we turn 18, and other countries have lowered or got rid of the drinking age so what makes our brains any different.…

Few reasons for teens drinking are: peer pressure, enjoyment, etc. But the main reason for doing so is “breaking the law.” 87% of high school seniors have used alcohol. That means that a large quantity of teens under the age of seventeen to eighteen have used alcohol before. We all know why teens drink, I mean is common since. Just the feel that they get of breaking the law is huge. Being rebel and not following the rules is an important role of a teen’s life. Consequences are the one that change them, but we don’t want them to experience the consequences of being under the influence of alcohol because we know them and they are fatal. Dying in a car accident and killing others is a mess that we don’t want to clean.…

Peer pressure also plays a big role in underage drinking. The most important thing in the life of a teenager is to “fit in”. Teenagers are almost expected to drink before they are 21 these days. If they don’t, they could easily be the outcast of their social circle and be made fun of. Most of the parents don’t punish their underage children for drinking because they did the same things when they were in high school. This can lead to teens thinking that it is an acceptable lifestyle to live.…
