Copyrighted material is a big deal. You must get permission from the people who own the material that you are wanting to use for yourself. Depending on the material that you are trying to use, you can get away with it by citing the material to where you got it. When you copyright material, like a picture, quote, etc., it means that the material has an owner.
The owner has the rights to that material that you are going to use. When a person uses the material that has an owner, they can be sued or sent to jail. When you design a web page this could be a problem for you, because there are different forms that can be placed on your website that you do not have rights for the material. By doing this, it is highly illegal, but there are people out there that sill copyright other peoples work and not even think twice about doing it.
An example of this would be in the past there was a guy who took pictures that belonged to the Associated Press and made his own changes to make a new form of content. One of the pictures that the guy took and made the changes was the hope picture of Barack Obama as his main focus. That picture was used during the whole campaign leading up to him becoming president. The issue between the Associated Press and the guy who used the picture illegally went to court, because the guy never asked the Associated Press for permission to modify it. The guy lied by saying the picture being original until he was caught in the lie. I am pretty sure that the guy lost his battle in court, because the guy probably made money off of those pictures by saying they were his own pictures.
Conclusion
The purpose of this is to let you know about copyright materials and that they should not be used by anyone unless you get permission by the people that own it. This rule will apply for elementary, junior high, high school, college, businesses, web pages, etc.
