My beloved friend, Coretta Scott king was a wise woman, yet she was still overlooked at times, and was hidden in the shadows of her husband, Martin Luther King Jr. Behind it all, Coretta was a striving, nurturing and passionate woman.
Coretta, much like her husband, was passionate about the civil rights movement and she strove for excellence. Many knew that Coretta would join Martin at his presentations, but it almost felt as if people skipped past the fact that she made her own appearances and history. I would accompany her on her journeys in which she spoke of justice economically and racially. Coretta used to make appearances and stand in for Martin when he wasn’t able to attend events, she would even show her talent and sing at charity concerts, that was something that was always endearing because Coretta had always loved to sing. It was at the South African embassy in which Coretta and three of her children were arrested. She was protesting against racial segregation, a good cause, but she put her children in danger. It was something I would always warn her about, but the children wanted to join their mother, they wanted to follow her footsteps. But it wasn’t Coretta’s fault, afterall, they were simply just trying to protest against the wrong in society, and she raised four beautiful children with Martin, who all were dedicated to the same causes their parents were. She was a great mother as well, she spent most of her time raising her children and she made sacrifices for them as well; she gave up wanting to pursue her singing career to raise her children and be mindful of them.
