Coriolanus is not willing to show his sacrifices he has made for the people, as if his pride will not let him follow traditions and rituals that men with the title which he is to receive has been accustomed to do. Coriolanus says “I had rather be their servant in my way, than sway with them in theirs.”(Act: 2, Scene: 1) by this statement we can see that he doesn’t believe in the rituals and traditions of the consuls requirements whilst he speaks with his family and Cominius. Coriolanus says: “Why in this woolvish toge should I stand here, to beg of Hob and Dick” by saying this Coriolanus shows he doesn’t care about the people and won’t have their best interests in mind. This upsets the people and makes them turn against him as they don’t believe that he would show any care for them.
Coriolanus doesn’t fulfil his promise to his mother when Menenius asks “Is this the promise that you made your mother?” (Act: 3, Scene: 3) as his pride doesn’t let him do what his mother has asked him. This shows how his pride has utterly destroyed his character as he can’t even be true to his word that he had given to his mother. A good leader must be humble and be able to fulfil his promises and that is something Coriolanus is lacking.
The attitude Coriolanus has towards the common people is shocking from the beginning of the book where he mocks them “You dissentious rogues” (Act: 1, Scene: 1) and even after they had banished him he says “You common cry of curs!” (Act: 3, Scene: 3). It doesn’t help his case when all he does is destroys his relationship with people who he needs to back him for the titles he wants.
Pride can destroy a leader as a leader needs to be able to apologize and be prepared to build things back up even when it is not his fault and he stills has to take ownership and fix
