Cormac Mccarthy Research Paper

Cormac McCarthy was born in Rhode Island on July 20, 1933. He was born to Charles Joseph and Gladys Christina McGrail McCarthy. He was born Charles, but when he got older, he changed his name to Cormac, after the Irish King. At four years old, his family moved from Rhode Island to Tennessee where his father was a lawyer until 1967. The family was Roman Catholic, and like such, Cormac McCarthy attended a Catholic High School in Knoxville. Once graduated, he attended to the University of Tennessee from 1951-1952. He did not finish his degree then, and instead left the university to join the Air Force. He was in the Air Force for four years and was even stationed in Alaska. Once again, he left school and moved to Chicago where he began work on his first novel. There, he also met his first wife with whom he had one son. They divorced a while after their son was born. After receiving a fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, he published his first novel The Orchard Keeper was published in 1965. Following the publishing, he traveled to Europe the visit Ireland (for his ancestral history). During this trip, he met his second wife. He continued travelling until 1967. In 1966, the Rockefeller Foundation granted McCarthy with a monetary grant. Along with his new wife, Ane DeLisle, McCarthy completed revisions of Outer Dark while living in Ibiza. Once returned to America, Outer Dark was published in 1968. The reviews for that publication were good, and in 1969, he received another fellowship, this one from the Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Writing.
