    1. As Mr. Dees left his lawyer’s office he thought about the last 25 years of his life. He certainly had some major successes in his education and professional life. He also found he had a few blind and unknown factors that mostly hurt him. His weaknesses and blind spots had cost him plenty. He had worked hard earning an under graduate degree in 3 ½ years in Berkeley, California; averaging 20 units a quarter and while working an average of 52 hours per week. He also married his junior year. He received his master’s degree a year later in international trade while mastering conversational Japanese. For seven years he very successfully climbed the corporate ladder raising a family and building security for his family by accumulating assets and saving for retirement and college educational expenses for his children. At the time this was the typical life and professional progression. Work hard, while being loyal to your employer provide for your family, live within your means, and save. Young adults of his generation lived to work while the youth of today seem to work to live. Not a bad concept he thought as he assessed his situation. Three times he had lost everything. After seven years of marriage his wife tired of his being transferred every nine months left with the children and moved back to California. He was so devastated that he did not even get a lawyer to represent himself. He just gave her everything including his retirement. He needed to become more self-aware. His current…

My body is under attack. An attack I am all too familiar with. It feels as if an explosive has detonated in my head. I am disoriented and struggling to get my thoughts together. The pain is intense and crippling. I tilt my head back, and rest it on the headboard hoping for relief. I shut my eyes, and gently place my hands on my temples. As I begin to massage my temples, the invader silently enters into my thoughts and begins to taunt me, “You deserve everything you get, he whispers”. “It doesn’t matter how you try to escape me, I will be here. I will be here today, tomorrow, and for the remainder of your life”. Trying to ignore the whisper, I grab two Advil off the nearby nightstand, and wash them down with a sip of coffee. I squeeze my eyes tight, and begin to feel tears burn the back of my eyelids. My thoughts begin to become tainted with feelings of despair, hopelessness and sorrow. I open my eyes, and standing within arm’s reach of me, is my ten year old son. I choke back my tears, force myself to smile and reach out for a hug.…

    Blacks in Criminal Justice

“GET THE FUCK ON THE GROUND NOW!” As soon as we turned we saw two African-American teenagers several years younger than us, with silver and black guns pointed directly at our heads. I would’ve never thought in a million years I would be a victim of aggravated robbery (becomes aggravated when a weapon is involved). I livedin my neighborhood for almost twelve years and never once felt afraid to walk alone at night. That night, I was walking home from my grandmothers with a friend; it was only a fifteen minute walk. The street we were walking down was a well lit, rural street, with cars driving through regularly. This area was one of the few places I would’ve thought of being victimized. As we lay on the ground, we were searched for valuables. As I was lying in the middle of the street, one of the guys explained to me, “IF YOU EVEN MOVE YOUR HEAD AN INCH, I’LL BLOW YOUR BRAINS OUT!” After the mugger’s comment I felt him place the cold, hard gun to my head. It was the scariest moment in my life; my whole body was trembling with fear. Once the second gunman cleared my friend’s pockets, the two took off running. The moment they left they fired off several shots. We remained on the ground for five, long minutes. Afterwards we got up, sprinted the remaining distance to my house, and then called the police. I’ve never considered being robbed by an African-American because I don’t associate crime with a color, but after being robbed at gun-point it makes it extremely difficult not to. But instead of blaming an entire race, I sat aside my differences. This is not the case for others. Author Barry Glassner writes, “when it comes to race, the more obvious the pattern the more obscure it seems,” (Glassner 114). When we first hear about crimes that are committed, we automatically assume that the assailant is guilty. Yet often in time it’s not the case.…
