You see your beautiful little girl coming out of school and you notice she has trouble sitting down in the car, you look at her closer, you see she has whelps, cuts, and bruises on her legs, are you upset? Obviously she received corporal punishment today. How does this make you feel? Personally, I do not feel corporal punishment should be allowed because of unfair blame, preferential treatment, and long term effects.
My first reason is unfair blame. Unfair blame can easily happen when there is a large school, large amount of students and of teacher. One of the several injustices is an account from Maureen Costello on may 5, 2010 “ I vividly recall the public, front-of-the-room, over-the-knee spanking of one girl, whose …show more content…
(from cnn.com,Source C) “The punishment is disproportionately applied to black students, according to the organization.” There is no reason as to why the black students should be looked at closer than their caucasian (white) counterparts, and paddled for tedious actions. Secondly dealing with race (source C) “During the 2006-2007 school year, for instance, black students made up 17.1% of the nationwide student population of 35.6% of those whom have been paddled at school.” This to me is a travesty, there is no reason for black students to be the main target of corporal punishment. Now I know some believe according to Andrea cancellare said that her 13-year old son was “swatted” without informing her. When she discussed the matter with school officials they told her “most parents like this because it takes care of punishment. It gets the kids back in class. It doesn't disrupt instruction. It's like the quick and dirty way to deal with misbehaved students.” This to me is just the school districts being lazy and trying to slack off. On the flip side, given that black students are looked at closer than caucasian students, believe it or not but the African American female students get beat more than any other. (source C -cnn.com) “Black girls were paddled at twice the rate of their white counterparts in the 13 states using corporal punishment most frequently. And although boys are punished …show more content…
Secondly, dealing with long term effects. (source B) “like its near relative bullying- corporal punishment affects three parties ; the child who received it, the teacher who gives it and whom eyewitness it.” Given that this comes from a doctor there must be some truth to this because it's coming from a very credible source. (source B) “ineffective method of discipline but also has deleterious effects on the physical and MENTAL health of those whom it is inflicted on.”(said by Dr.Greydanus) This is another point made by medical professionals which proves that corporal punishment is horrible and highly unnecessary.
Over all I feel that Corporal punishment should be banned because of long term effects, unfair blame, and preferential treatment. I have provided you with facts, stories, and personal accounts from parents, religious leaders, and many more. I now leave you with the ultimate decision, will you stand for a horrible injustice as such or do you choose to save the future (our lives as children) by petitioning congress to get this law of legal corporal punishment
