The nine provisions in the code of ethics is intended to be a guidance for nursing practice. Two provisions that influence my practice are provisions one and four.Provision one states,”The nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity and unique attributes of every person.”(www.ANA/ethics) This provision reminds me of the golden rule “do to others as you would have them do to you”
(Merriam Webster Dictionary,1991) All patients deserve the same compassionate care and respect.I want to give my patients the care I feel I’m entitled to and care that I would want my family to receive.Provision four states, “The nurse has the authority, accountability and responsibility for nursing practices, make decisions and actions consistent with obligation to promote health and provide optimal care.” (www.ANA/ethics) To deliver quality, compassionate care is my obligation to my patients. One instance early in my nursing career,I made a judgement error and did not promote health and safety.
My patient was diagnosed with osteomyelitis of the neck and was just informed by the infectious disease team treatment consisted of six weeks of antibiotic therapy. My patient was also informed at this time that requirement to stay in the hospital for the duration of treatment was needed as a result of past medical history treatment outpatient would not be applicable. My patient was in distress and became very belligerent and threatening towards staff.I was afraid this was my first experience with an agitated patient, I paged the managing physician and allowed my patient to leave against medical advice. The following day the patient was readmitted and was placed on my assignment. That day,I made the decision that my obligation was to my patient and not my fear.As a nurse it is my responsibility to educate my patient and promote health. My patient did not realize the severity of the complications that could arise from not receiving treatment. After being educated my patient decided to stay for the six weeks.Today, when I have patients insisting on leaving against medical advice,I do all that I can to discourage this decision.Either way I must respect my patient’s wishes. The code of ethics provisions assist with making nurses to make better decisions or judgements. These provisions help guide nurses with ethical problem solving. The code of ethics are designed to develop nurse
into responsible, compassionate and competent nurses. H. Leadership qualities essential for a nurse to possess are effective communication skills, good listener, commitment and problem solving abilities. The significance of a bedside nurse is the bedside nurse is the direct care provider.Patient experience usually starts with the bedside nurse.Leadership qualities the bedside nurse should have are empathy, critical thinking skills, ability to problem solve and respond quickly in an emergency.Bedside nurses acting as leaders can impact the patient outcome, and outcomes of unit.Leadership qualities needed within the nursing team essential for an effective team is commitment. Within the nursing team each member must be committed to the goal of the unit and be willing to adapt to changes. As a leader in the nursing team, each member should recognize own abilities and limitations as well as acknowledge individual strengths of the team. The significance of the nursing team is dependent on the team functioning as a whole and not one individual. The interdisciplinary team needs leaders to have effective communication skills and be good listeners.
