In the novel “The Catcher in the Rye” the is a young boy named Holden Caulfield. This young man goes through personal conflicts and external conflicts in his life. In this novel Salinger creates Holden to ultimately be a dynamic character, as he changes as a result of death and corruption, and insecurity.
To begin, Holden suffers through the death of several people close to him which changes his life. Over the course of this paragraph you will begin to understand how Holden's reacts to the death around him which will reveal more about him. “He’s dead now. Though he usually got upset when things that are the closest to him get corrupted due to him trying to preserve innocence. Holden has seen corruption in places he has least expected. “I saw something that drove me crazy. Somebody’d written “Fuck you” on the wall.” (Salinger 221). This hits Holden hard because he doesn't like when things that are suppose to be innocent are corrupted. This is also a major thing for Holden because this is one of the places he was innocent in. When Holden was hiding from his parents his mom walked in and smelled lit cigarettes and saw smoke. Even when Holden was try to protect his sister from corruption he corrupted her by allowing her to take the fall for him. His mom walked in and said “Phoebe have you been smoking a cigarette in here?...I just lit it for a second. I just took one puff. Then I threw it out the window”(Salinger ). Holden takes things situation heavy because he in one point of the novel states he wants to protect kids from corruption. This situation hurts him because not only is it a child but his little sister and as much as he wanted to keep her savage from corruption he is now frustrated because he is the one who has corrupted her.
