What is a theme you ask? The theme is the message or what can be taken away from the story and reflected on in one's real life. Even if it is seemingly insignificant, superficial, or elusive. It's all part of life. “Every story narrows a broad underlying idea, shapes it in a unique way, and makes the underlying idea concrete. That's how theme is created. In other words, the theme in a story is a representation of the idea behind the story.”(Clugston, 2010) The story I want to explore more is Country Lovers, the theme in this story is love and racism, two literary elements in the story county lovers that that contribute to the theme is the stories plot and character. Plot and character are just some elements that affect the narrative theme, now I will go into greater detail and explain the theme in Country Lovers.

The story Country Lovers is a story of forbidden love between a black woman—Thebedi and Paulus, the son of her white masters. It was a story of a love that bore out of childhood romance that blossomed to adulthood until the harmless flirtation lead to sexual curiosity. Eventually, Thebedi got pregnant with his child without him knowing it. When he left for college and did go back, he found out that Thebedi was already married to Njabulo. Njabulo accepted the child as his own but Paulus overcome with fear upon discovering the child took matters to his own hand. The very next day, the child mysteriously died (as cited in Clugston, 2010, pp. 44-50). This story is very racy because of the intensity and the scandalous nature of the topic. Because of the heightened sense of racial prejudice during the early 1900s, a forbidden romance, an interracial romance is considered social taboo. And to even consider writing a literature that centers on this topic is truly fascinating and attention-grabbing to any reader .

The theme is the hidden meaning behind a story. Usually, the theme is not stated in the book, and it’s up to the reader to determine the context. The theme (or central idea) of Maximum Ride by James Patterson is love and courage. A good example of these themes is on page 33. The text says “‘That's where they took Angel,’ I said.…

Theme- In poetry, fiction, or drama, the theme is the dominating idea in a work (Pearson 547). In Ha Jin’s An Entrepreneur’s Story, the theme seemed to be disappointment. All throughout the story the main character thought by having money, the perfect girl, and everything that came along with it would make him happy. The outcome of the situation with Manshan, his wealth, and the mother-in-law shows him that getting what he wanted didn’t make his life turn out to be any happier than he pictured (Pearson 265).…

The theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly. In the first part of the novel “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, the primary topic is courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear. The alternate topic is love triumphs over all. The primary reason for courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear is due to Rikki wasn’t scared for a long time when he saw Nag. The alternate reason for love triumphs over all is due to Rikki killed the snakes that tried to put the family to death and killed the eggs as well. In the exposition, we did learn that it’s is difficult for a snake to scare a mongoose. Let's see which theme is right.…

The theme of a book could be described as what the reader or audience has learned throughout reading the story. One way the theme is portrayed in this novel is when the soldiers would go home on leave for a little while. Another way the theme is portrayed throughout the novel is when you lost your friends and fellow soldiers in battle. “Theme is the underlying message or big idea that is portrayed throughout the story” (What is Theme in Literature). In reading this book you can learn that being a soldier during any war can be a hard road to go down. In the novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Remarque, the theme of the story is how the main character learns that the effects of war is hard for some soldiers to deal with. The novel shows this theme in at least instance; going home from war on leave, losing your friends in battle,…

Love, both erotic and platonic, motivates change in Gilgamesh. Enkidu changes from a wild man into a noble one because of Gilgamesh, and their friendship changes Gilgamesh from a bully and a tyrant into an exemplary king and hero. Because they are evenly matched, Enkidu puts a check on Gilgamesh’s restless, powerful energies, and Gilgamesh pulls Enkidu out of his self-centeredness. Gilgamesh’s connection to Enkidu makes it possible for Gilgamesh to identify with his people’s interests. The love the friends have for each other makes Gilgamesh a better man in the first half of the epic, and when Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh’s grief and terror impel him onto a futile quest for immortality.…

In Nadine Gordimer’s story “Country Lovers”, she tells a story of forbidden love on a South African farm. She starts by telling the story of how the little kids on the farms all play together but when they get older they go their separate ways because of their color. In this story race is a big issue and it is forbidden for those races to mix so whatever needs to be done to protect that will be done. At first insight the reader connected me to the story by telling of a white boy and black girl whose friendship grew into something so much deeper but they knew they couldn’t survive together. As children growing up we had this white family who lived across the street from us and we would play with them every day after school. But even though I did not grow up in the same time-frame as this story, they still went to separate schools from us because they we to private ones. But I can relate to Gordimer in this story because as we also became older, we stopped playing together and moved on with our lives. The different environments and level of educations separated us due to the facts that we did not attend the same school. But…

Country Lovers captures emotion and imagination only in a way our human minds can draw for us that no television will ever be able to mimic. For me this story took a familiar feeling story and put a twist on it with a semi modern feel. Using a formalist analytical view the story was in a memorable setting, and had a classic plot. Along with the setting the author was able to use what seemed appropriate language use that added to the mood and theme. Overall my conclusion of this book is a good one.…
