He knew wherever he was, God is always with him. While speaking to King Hrothgar, Beowulf mentioned that, “God must decide Who will be given to death’s cold grip” (line 271-272). This shows that he has a powerful courage and he believes that he will win this battle. Either Beowulf wins or loses, he knows it is all part of God’s plan. He also mentioned that God’s plan for him was to come and fight Grendel so he could save the people from this horrific crime. By putting having faith in God shows that beowulf has a strong courage through his words and actions. Beowulf also has the courage to talk about his father. Because Beowulf father was a brave man like him, Beowulf was not ashamed of sharing who his father is. He has a strong courage and believes that Hrothgar would accept his request to battle with Grendel. While meeting up with King Hrothgar, Beowulf comes across Unferth who is a foil character.
When approaching Unferth, Beowulf is attacked by Unferth about his swimming match against Becca. Unferth claims that, if Beowulf cannot defeat Becca how would he ever win Grendel? Beowulf responds to Unferth is that, “But fate let me find its heart with my sword, hack myself Free; fought that beast’s last battle” (line 343-345). This shows that beowulf is strong enough to fight any monster that comes in his way. Beowulf has the courage and the gut to fight a creature that is bigger and dangerous than
